We argue that not only the host is transformed as a consequence of the migration, but also the destination and the wider landscape.

4. Migration

Probably the most obvious and difficult to define and measure: as a result of the previous ones, there is a movement of users from one site or platform to another. This can take many forms: technical actions, such as account setup or closure, content archiving...

3. Collective platform consciousness

Users become part of a collective that is distinct to their experience of ordinary site/platform use.

They see themselves as connected to and affected by a larger event + as part of a shared responses.

The abstract states: Using the 2022 Twitter to Mastodon migration as a case study, this article contributes a new understanding of social media migration (SMM). It begins with a review of existing studies of SMM, showing how migration is often understood as a combination of ‘push and pull factors’. We suggest a need to widen the conceptual scope for how we approach SMM in ways that more directly tie such movements to specific questions of power, agency and events that ripple through digital cultures. Drawing on social media account analysis, a survey of recently migrated Mastodon users, content from high-profile Twitter users and other media commentaries, we re-present the migration in order to detail our ‘eventful’ theory of migration. Eventful social media migration is comprised of five elements: an initial X factor; the emergence of a critical voice; a collective platform consciousness; an observable migration; and a wider terrain transformation.

@BBCRadio4 I wonder why other parties in the oposition do not receive half as much attention as fascist parties get.

I wish the major news show covered on prime time other more pressing matters such as how oposition aims to tackle inequalities or mitigate the #climatechange, for example.
