Retired from local government - health & human services IT. Twin Cities lifer. Finally getting hip to the American ruse.
I was still in high school, had been going to new wave concerts, but I think this was the first small-scale "punk" show I ever attended. They were recording the Stink EP around that time and played a bunch of it. Really revved up night as I recall.

I saw the Replacements for the first time at Willey Hall, in early '82.

I was at that show with a roommate who took a bunch of great photos of REM, the 'Burbs and the 'Mats. I lost track of the guy over the years but I still think about those pictures and wish he'd post or publish them somewhere.

I treated myself to their sweet and sour pork in the mid-80's every semester when I finished with finals

My memory from that Motorhead show was that I got there early and wanted to play pinball. I stood behind a dude playing my favorite machine, looking over his shoulder maybe less than patiently. Then he turned and glared at me.

It was Lemmy. I melted and backed away, slowly.

Stunt cycle and chopper

That was the first time I saw Jonathan Richman. He of course did no Modern Lovers tunes, but John Cale did a lovely piano version of Pablo Picasso.

I don't remember the pinball call-out but it certainly could have been that show. I played those machines often but I swear it wasn't me.

Everything about this makes me smile. Congrats, Kareem!

I was a student volunteer at the Whole for those "punk" years. We hosted some great shows along the way.

Okay, I think you're referring to the Dead Kennedys / Huskers show in the Great Hall, spring of '83. Someone got hurt there. The smaller Whole Music Club in the basement of Coffman kept doing punk shows up until the Die Kreuzen incident 2or 3 years later.

It was Die Kreuzen. My roommate was running the sound board that night. I don't remember it being followed by an explicit rule, but there was certainly a halt to hosting punk shows there for at least a couple of years.

Um, I think that was me.

It was always a disappointment when they'd run a Bowery Boys.

Excellent piece.

An amazing show. So glad I went.

I missed pretty much every show that happened in the '90s - spent the decade building a career and family and basically stopped hitting the clubs for awhile. But if I had been active in '92 I definitely would have gone to that Helmet/Hammerhead show. Jawbox too.

Yes, the Whittier shows were in that park building. Strangely appropriate venue for us "let's put on a show" kids.

My roommate was the sound guy for many of the Garage Production shows, and our band ended up opening a few of them, including The Freeze, Meatjoy and Crucifucks shows. All highlights in my short-lived stint as terrible guitarist.

Greg Ginn and Kanye West were both available but I think I'd have some issues working with them nowadays
