The EPROMs, no. My main focus is preserving the firmware of the EAS board so it can be restored. However, there is also a firmware ROM on the SCG1. I am not sure if it contains the character set, but I'll make an effort to dump it regardless.

The CG is also rather quite configurable... it has a handful of settings from letting you change the color combination to any of the three familiar Trilithic CG colors.

There is also an alert crawl repeat feature (not shown here) that re-displays the crawl for an active alert at a defined interval.

There's even a built-in video trouble screen that is output whenever the unit loses its input video signal. Might seem a bit familiar...

....aaaand here's a live demonstration of the character generator! This is made possible by the built in Trilithic SCG1 board that is located on the underside of the unit, and connected to the main EAS-1 circuit board.

History was made today (for the cable archivists, anyway...)! I got my hands on the very rare and never seen Gorman Redlich EAS-2 (EAS-1 with a built-in CG).

I'll write up a blog entry on my site about this one soon, but not before recording a few things and dumping the EPROMs.

A plush of the character "Kasane Teto" who has red hair, and twin "drill" pigtails. She wears a gray dress with red lining. The plush is sat atop a desktop computer wearing the "Dell" brand badge. Behind the plush is a series of black cabling. To the right of the plush, there is a black box with a series of yellow, white, and red composite video cabling attached. Above the plush are four monitor screens, each one displaying a different video signal. Each monitor screen has four knobs, each labeled: "BRIGHT", "COLOR", "TINT" and "CONTRAST". Above the monitor screens is another box labeled "EAS SYSTEM CONTROLLER" with a green LCD display on the left of the box. In the middle of the box there is a series of gray button, consisting of digits in a T9 layout, as well as buttons for CANCEL, SELECT, F1 (up arrow), F2 (down arrow), F3 (right arrow), and F4 (left arrow). On the right side of the unit there is another label reading "EASyCAST", "ENCODER/DECODER". Below that label there is a speaker grille with 7 holes in a circle pattern. To the right of that is a singular hole with the label "MIC" underneath it.

A collection of computer systems in one room. On the left, there are three grey metal boxes, each labeled with "The Weather Channel" logo, stacked on one another. The bottom box is labeled "IntelliStar 2 xD", and the two above it are labeled "IntelliStar 2 Jr". Each computer has a vent exposed for air flow, with a fan behind each vent. The bottom two computers have fans that emit a blue LED. The top computer has a fan emitting a pink LED. Each of the three has a blue LED for power indication on the front panel. Sitting on top of the third IntelliStar system is a bare metal computer, with its rear side facing the camera, exposing it's I/O. There are various interface ports on the left side of the chassis, and on the right there is an interface with two pairs of analog video ports. There is a plug for power input. This system is an Silicon Graphics "O2". On the right side of the photo, there is a weirdly shaped computer system with a dark blue shell wearing a "Silicon Graphics" badge on the front. On the bottom, there is grey foundation piece that holds the chassis together, labeled "O2" on the bottom left. There are grilles for a speaker. In the center of the photo slightly to the right, there is a grey metal box mounted inside of a black computer rack. This metal box is labeled "Weather Star XL, The Weather Channel" on the front and has handles on the left and right side of the box. There is a white label on the front. There are two holes for power and reset. Above that grey box, there is another "IntelliStar 2 Jr" box exactly as describe previously, this time located inside of the computer rack. It is wearing a pink sticker with the text "VBA 4". Above that system, there is a beige, vertically slim system labeled "The Weather Star Jr. It has 8 LEDs on the front, three of which are lit up green. Above that system, there is a grey box labeled "The Weather Star Jr Audio Alert", with 2 LEDs, one lit red. There is a The Weather Channel logo on the right.

so anyway The Weather Channel has resorted to using AI for Jim Cantore's voice... even the text feels like it was generated by an LLM. Note the "Ai-Assisted" in the bottom left.

It comes as no surprise and is honestly pathetic. Soon they'll lay him off too and use his name and voice without him.
