Why MHWs intensify

Through analysis of energy flows sea-atmosphere it was found that, during concurrence, sea-atmos latent heat flow decreases considerably. This favours heat accumulation in the ocean, thereby increasing sea surface temperature and MHW intensity.

Double impact: when the sea and atmosphere coincide

The analysis of the concurrence of MHW and atmospheric heat waves (AHWs) revealed that MHWs intensify significantly when they coincide with an AHW, while the characteristics of the latter are hardly altered.

Characterisation and intensification of MHWs

Characterisation of MHWs in the Med basin and analysis of their historical evolution over the last 40 years showed an increase in the frequency, intensity and geographical extent of these extreme temperature events.

The underlying trend: the Mediterranean sea is warming

The study highlights a clear and persistent increase in SST, especially during summer months, which has accelerated over the last two decades. This warming drive extreme phenomena such as marine heat waves.
