Elijah McCoy's work revolutionised transportation for a generation. Today, our chemical engineers follow in his footsteps as they attempt to crack sustainable aviation fuel, hydrogen storage and other sustainable innovations that could transform transportation for the next generation.
ceb.cam.ac.uk
McCoy's design spawned imitators, even after he patented his device in 1872, but railwaymen were said to prefer the original. Supposedly, they would ask that their locomotives be fitted with 'the real McCoy', giving rise to the modern idiom.
ceb.cam.ac.uk
McCoy's design used the pressure generated by the steam engine to pump oil to the moving parts of the system. This simple process removed the need for manual lubrication and massively reduced engine downtime, improving productivity and efficiency.

Elijah McCoy (1844-1929) was a Canadian-American engineer, most famous for designing a process to lubricate steam engine bearings automatically.
