"We’re reaching the end of the oil era. What Californians need now are steady, clear-eyed leaders willing to stand with workers, communities and families — not fossil fuel billionaires looking for one last payday."

🚨 Newsom just signed a bill that will EXPAND oil drilling in California 🚨

This signals “what could become a dangerous new pattern: allowing Big Oil to hold California hostage every time a refinery announces a potential closure.”

Phillips 66 is leaving a toxic legacy behind in these SoCal neighborhoods, contaminating groundwater with lead and PFAs - none that are biodegradable. Californians have paid the price of oil in CA for decades, its time refineries clean up after themselves on their way out. #StopTheShakedown

📢 NEW: CCEJN reports —

31% of oil & gas sites near Kern County homes, schools & parks are leaking
37% of leaks are allowed by regulatory loopholes
The “heavy oil” exemption shields 68% of CA’s oil & gas sites from leak monitoring & repair rules

“It’s absurd for our climate policy to include billions in giveaways for Big Oil so it can claim to reduce climate-altering emissions on paper instead of having to do it in real life.”
- Asha Sharma, @leadershipcounsel.bsky.social State Policy Manager
California's signature climate effort is up for renewal — and it's a fight
The future of California's cap-and-trade program is in limbo. Experts say the state can't meet its climate goals without it.

Cap-and-Trade is the largest source of funding to build a more affordable & equitable climate future. It can’t be compromised with handouts to #BigOil polluters when there’s so much at stake for the rest of us, like access to healthy & affordable food.
SHOBE: Families and farmers deserve priority in California’s climate future
California's cap-and-trade program has dealt benefits to farmers. A reauthorization could put them in jeopardy, writes Brian Shobe for Sun View.

On its 13th anniversary, we remember the #Chevron #Richmond Refinery Fire and the 15,000+ people it sent to doctors and hospitals. A settlement of $5 million for this fire, followed by another for broader harms at $550 million, is just the start of the accountability for #BigOil that we deserve.
Orange textured background with an image and white text overlaid. The photo is of massive plumes of white vapor and dark smoke rising from an oil refinery above the city of Richmond, California. The text reads:

"Streamlining development must be tied to labor and env'l standards so that there is a clear public benefit and not just a giveaway to developers.... Without CEQA, developers have no need to even think about the environmental and community benefits of their projects." @lorenagonzalez.bsky.social

Everyone check out this thread by @apen4ej.bsky.social breaking down what's really happening with oil refinery closures and CA's energy transition.

#BigOil hopes to once again rake in profits at our [health and taxpayer $] expense, and spreading confusion to divide progressives clears their path.

Yesterday, @politico.com ran an article about this week’s @calenergy.bsky.social meeting claiming that climate and environmental justice groups are lining up behind a plan that would “pump the brakes” on the transition away from fossil fuels. It’s time to set the story straight ⬇️⬇️

Thank you! It's almost like when we demand affordable housing, we're also demanding that it's developed in ways that DON'T harm low-income communities. We don't need to choose between health and housing; that false choice is a strategy to maintain the status quo.

Orgs say: "This bill is the worst anti-environmental bill in CA in recent memory. It represents an unprecedented rollback to California’s fundamental environmental + community protections at a time in which the people of CA grapple with unprecedented federal attacks to their lives and livelihoods."

The attacks against some of our most vulnerable members of our community come from the same system that is deregulating environmental protections, defunding public health, increasing nuclear weapons spending, targeting organizers, and criminalizing protest.

Cap-and-Trade needs to be reformed so that it does what it was meant to do, instead of providing a path for polluters to worsen our air quality.

Reauthorization of the Cap-and-Trade program without common sense changes that generate more resources for Californians and reduce climate and air pollution recklessly ignores growing inequality, the mounting climate disaster costs, and the communities forced to breathe the nation’s dirtiest air.

"Californians are overpaying for gas that isn’t performing. We now have hard evidence to back up what frontline communities have long suspected: gas-fired power plants aren’t worth the increasing costs it takes to maintain them."

Happy #Juneteenth! We're celebrating but we all still know racial injustice is far from over. Racist land use policies and white supremacy brought us to a world where Black and brown neighborhoods across the US are disproportionately enduring the health impacts of pollution and the fight continues!
