McSweeney and Starmer are the embodiment of Talleyrand's quip on Louis XVIII that he "remembered everything but learned nothing"

They didn't just buy them off, they quite often agreed with them!

And they had history together as well, because they'd come up through the 1980s progressivist culture of the LCC bit of the party
What is remarkable is how the team around Starmer also buys into a myth around 1990s Labour that venerates performative hippy-punching rather than a more complicated reality where Blair and Brown also bought the party "hippies" off by giving them key wins in social, welfare and human rights policy

The entirety of British politics now just consists of all parties from across the political spectrum making increasingly deranged statements about how and why they are going to deport people

Oh good, Glenn Beck has created an AI George Washington. You will be shocked to learn that the AI George Washington created by Glenn Beck sounds exactly like what would happen if Glenn Beck built an AI George Washington to sound exactly like Glenn Beck.

it's great how while actually quite a lot of the european left copped on to its russia blindspot since 2022, varoufakis actually radicalised into a full blown tankie simply because razem politicians dared confront him about it to his face

The BBC News at Six is highly misleading. They present the story as if the bigot has won the case, which is false. To make matters worse, they end with their editor reading a proclamation “of the Supreme Court” that is entirely incorrect.

A War Without End ⚔️

When the English Civil Wars broke out in 1642, many expected that one great battle would decide it, but after the inconclusive Battle of Edge Hill, it became clear the conflict was set to drag on.

This is true, but IMO a big part of how the ALP has been able to do this is that they inherited a growing economy.

So they can basically just funnel the proceeds of mining exports into public services and watch while the Coalition goes mental.
As ever, a huge difference between Australian Labor and UK Labour is that while the AU Labour government hasn't exactly set new winning records in office, it *hasn't* done any of this mad nonsense and instead has watched with a sensible face on while the Australian right wing burns itself alive
The flip in political campaign tactics where parties have stopped trying to *appeal to voters’ desires* in favour of *appealing to their grievance, fear and anger* caused by the wholesale importation of US culture wars tactics is deeply weird.

Whereas the problem with going 'we will have the old Labour right's approach to social issues BUT we are going to do Old Labour economic policies to make it up to our left flank' is that Labour voters are repelled by the social issues and the economic policies don't work!
Let me count the ways in which Labour isn’t working
The government’s muddled thinking on the economy is causing it to haemorrhage support on all sides

honestly i think you could probably describe the vast majority of American media, political, and corporate elites as decadent

nobody knows how bad things can get
you'd think that the fact that the president is currently trying to get the Feds to arrest Senators would be what the NYT editorial board would focus on but...
I see the gizmo cult has made its way into the NYT

Yeah, MPs openly siding with Peggie, BBC giving interviews with her lawyer, etc - all basically taking her winning as assumed. This should be hugely embarrassing for them and prompt a rethink, but of course the one technical winning ground will give them an excuse not to.
If the headlines spinning this as a win for Peggie seem pre-written, I guarantee it's because they were, however carefully couched they might seem after some hasty editing.
Sandie Peggie's claims against Upton dismissed & most of her claims against NHS Fife are dismissed. Questions remain for NHS Fife over the process they pursued, which led to Peggie's harassment claim being partially upheld.

The tribunal ruled Upton's use of female changing facilities not unlawful.

My free advice to this couple? Instead of paying £47k a year in school fees and scraping by, stick 15k a year in each kid's bank account so that they each have around £100k at age 18 to spend on a house, business or uni. You then have £17k/year leftover to spend on luxuries. Better life all round

"House of Commons Jerk Seasoning" is 1) an extremely funny concept and more importantly 2) a sign of a complete and total victory for cultural pluralism in a way that is kind of difficult to concieve
Look, I know things aren’t great at the moment for (a) anyone, and (b) the Labour Party, but fuck me that’s bleak

I'm sorry but a country where the legislature sells jerk seasoning as gift shop tat is not one where the engines of multiculturalism can be rolled back to 1948
