People are always surprised to learn how little creators actually own in comics, games, etc. Big corporate brands are usually built on a work-for-hire model, meaning creators get paid once and then the *company* owns their ideas forever. This is why independent/creator-owned work is so important.

People are always surprised to learn how little creators actually own in comics, games, etc. Big corporate brands are usually built on a work-for-hire model, meaning creators get paid once and then the *company* owns their ideas forever. This is why independent/creator-owned work is so important.

A huge issue that remains is that the arbiters of “taste” in comics are so out of touch with what the readership actually is, so projects that could have legs end up either sitting in development hell or being rejected flat out.

“I don’t need them to like me” is both so important to internalize and so difficult to actually feel, especially when people liking you is sort of a key component in how society weighs whether you’re gonna survive the winter (literally and metaphorically speaking).
