This fab black and white mosaic is at the entrance to the House of Marcus Caesius Blandus. I love how its marine theme - with its dolphins, hippocampus, trident and rudder- and the crenellated city wall at the top, hint at life in #Pompeii overlooking the Bay of Naples 😍 #archaeology #MosaicMonday

For #RomanSiteSaturday let's go to a villa beneath the Church of Santa Maria Assunta at Positano with its amazing paintings in the triclinium (dining room). The luxurious maritime villa was destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. It presumably covered an area...🧵1/2

Colorful frescoes cover the walls of room, featuring geometric patterns, decorative panels, vines, and small painted birds. The artwork shows shades of red, yellow, blue, and green, though parts are faded and cracked with age. The floor is bare stone, and the walls display a mix of detailed ornamentation and damaged plaster, giving a glimpse into classical Roman interior decoration.
