Hard drive is a macguffin to show off Jade’s abs
Went back to watch Marty get confused over tabs
Mia Wallace has to take her jabs
And a penguin helps Coogan’s character find his gonads…?

2025 watch #197 - The Penguin Lessons (2024). “I have no wish to harm the penguin…” Steve Coogan is perfect as the jaded and sarcastic school teacher forced to take care of a penguin when he rescues it from an oil spill. A gentle way to spend a couple of hours. #filmsky

2025 watch #196 - The Collapse (2025). Eddie Pepitone, the comic’s comic’s comic has stood up again, and his latest stand up is one of his best. It’ll stand the test of time, if we make it. Eddie doesn’t think we will 😁 #filmsky

2025 watch #195 - Pulp Fiction (1994). Hard to describe the anticipation we had for Tarantino’s second feature, especially as here in the UK we’d spent two years wearing out our bootleg copies of Reservoir Dogs as it wasn’t released on VHS until 1995. I love this film.

2025 watch #194 - Back to the Future (1985). Rebel with a cause Marty McFly must help his mum and dad fall in love in 1955, so that he can travel back to the future in Doc’s DeLorean. All time Spielbergian classic that made Michael J Fox a movie star and Universal a box office smash hit. #filmsky

A writer who meets a killer
A killer who commits matricide
A writer who turns into a killer
And Christian Slater’s killer gets stuck in his ride

2025 watch #193 - Psycho Therapy. “Then one day you decided to talk to her… about potatoes.” This kind of indie mumblecore lives or dies by two things: the dialogue and the cast. And I liked both. Script is low key funny, Buscemi is great, Magaro always delivers, and Britt Lower is a Severance star.

2025 watch #192 - House By The River (1950). “Now isn’t he like a child, he wanted his picture in the paper.” Not so memorable but still a solid thriller from Fritz Lang, with the narcissistic killer front and centre played admirably by Louis Hayward. #filmsky

2025 watch #191 - Dolan’s Cadillac (2009). A woman is murdered, and her husband is out to avenge her death, and revenge is best served cold in the hot empty desert. Effective Stephen King adaptation with Christian Slater in top form - though Greg Byrk would have made a better Walking Dude. #filmsky

2025 watch #190 - My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done (2009). "Razzle them, dazzle them." Michael Shannon is pitch perfect as an intense and troubled young man in I think his first leading role. Many orbiters of the Lynchian world are here, given great lines by Werner Herzog and his writer. #filmsky

A movie that will hypnotise
A movie that makes you look to the skies
A movie with a tree with a nasty surprise
A movie full of secrets and lies

2025 watch #189 - Luce (2019). A taut and provocative thriller that keeps you guessing for the first hour if not to the end, with knockout performances from all involved but especially Octavia Spencer, Naomi Watts and Kelvin Harrison Jr. #filmsky

2025 watch #188 - Charisma (1999). I’m glad I discovered Kiyoshi Kurosawa. After watching Cure I found Charisma. A very different story with shades of Stalker, Kurosawa puts so much into every frame, every soundscape, every performance. Truly a unique cinematic voice. Can’t wait to see more #filmsky

2025 watch #187 - Dogma (1999). God is absent & Angels are rebelling. Kevin Smith at the height of his powers with this irreverent but smartly written religious comedy. Not as funny as The Life of Brian, much funnier than The Passion of the Christ. Whatever happened to Linda Fiorentino? #filmsky

2025 watch #186 - Cure (1997). The onion peels slowly in Japanese movies, and you begin to understand what’s happening at the same speed as the detective, played by the always excellent Koji Yakusho (Perfect Days). Japanese psychological horror, creeping dread & occasionally gruesome. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #filmsky

2025 watch #185 - Honey Don’t! (2025). Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke might vibe on set, but it’s not translating to the screen. This one’s marginally better than Drive-Away Dolls, which means the third in the trilogy holds some promise…?

2025 watch #184 - Eddington. Feels like every importance & every division heightened by Covid, the response, everyone going online, is injected directly into your brain & the body must adjust. Race, politics, conspiracies, protests, masks, bent cops, apathy & anger. But satire? Not sure. #filmsky

A mastermind who’s dumber than he looks
A girl with a needle and a sweet tooth for poor decisions
A David Cronenberg about the human body in flux
A week saved by David Lynch and his odd visions.

2025 watch #183 - Wild at Heart (1990). Certainly one of Lynch’s horniest movies. Not a personal favourite, but at least the actors are all in, including Nic Cage, Laura Dern, Willem Dafoe, Diane Ladd, and Harry Dean Stanton. Also a few Twin Peaks cameos like Sherilyn Fenn. #filmsky

2025 watch #182 - The Mastermind (2025). The Jeanne Dielman of heist movies: 1/4 interesting build up, 3/4 endurance test. But I fell asleep twice at this rainy afternoon showing, so feel I can’t give an exact review…

2025 watch #181 - The Girl with the Needle. Girl meets boy, girl loses boy to war and does what she can to survive in this brooding Danish kitchen sink gothic horror from Magnus von Horn. Plenty to like here, most notably beautiful black & white cinematography, and an unpredictable story. #filmsky
November 1, 2025 at 7:46 PM
2025 watch #180 - Crimes of the Future (2022). Crimes of Cronenberg amirite? Crash plus Existenz in a future where the body is growing neo organs & performance artists seem to be the only people who know what to do with them. Plus sex & plastic surgery & autopsies on kids. Built to shock. Bit daft.

A subtle dark comedy about sexual assault, Coppola shlopola should have been a pass, Nobody needed a Nobody 2, but Stone vs Plemons is an acting masterclass.

2025 watch #179 - Bugonia (2025). Misery meets 10 Cloverfield Lane! Poor Things was the first time Lanthimos directed someone else’s screenplay. Bugonia is the second, but it’s more obvious here. Still, an underwhelming Lanthimos is still a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ treasure and Stone and Plemons are perfect. #filmsky
