In Africa, Russia plays a classic neo imperialist game that includes mercenaries, regular troops, huge amounts of violence and a stream of broken promises to local governments not yet, quite, under its control. A planned oil pipeline in Congo may not even be built—let alone benefit ordinary people

This is a naïvely charitable formulation from Andrew Ryvkin: “Trump sees everything as a deal, and for Putin, any deal is a revelation of weakness. Trump is a creature of the Manhattan-real-estate world; Putin grew up amid the rubble of postwar Leningrad. Those Soviet courtyards formed him”

Fifa is the most notoriously corrupt organization in the sporting world. But US media haven't got a clue about any of that, and most major US outlets never reported on the corruption scandal, because they view "soccer" as something uninteresting to Americans.
It’s weird that news organizations like the BBC are covering this as if it’s a real thing with a real process behind it—and not clearly some nakedly invented “participation trophy” by a corrupt organization to curry favor with a corrupt and easily manipulated man-child. www.bbc.com/sport/footba...
