Strongly agree, Andy. I take the right wing strategy to be: (1) to obfuscate the science (cite maverick voices; raise the case of thalidomide) and (2) to champion personal choice over collective responsibility (mask wearing; vaccination).
I hadn't thought of that. It's happened before: de Gaulle appealing directly to the troops and going over the heads of the generals during the Algiers putsch of 1961.
