Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Here we go. It's apparently only available in Wayback now (I should really copy it for preservation). Only goes up to 2015 and a lot missing, but it's a useful starting point. web.archive.org/web/20240924...

Regarding the transgender women in sports “issue” here’s why it’s about transphobia and not fairness🧵

There are two schools of thought on this:

1. Men are in women’s sports. This is a problem.

2. Transgender women do not seem to be disproportionately outcompeting cisgender women. No problem.

A UN report claimed 800 medals lost by cisgender women… but a quick dig into that source finds a TERF group soliciting self reported claims from competitions of all types, (including hot dog eating), at all levels, lacking verification or any type of control or comparison to the field

Recent conversation with an old TTRPG buddy around our shared love of V:tM and the WoD in general and the shortcomings I feel the entire thing had.
Important to understand that I still love a lot of what WoD is/was despite feeling there are some serious problems with it.

the good thing is they are all perfectly safe to visit because failures, when they happen, do not happen fast. every single site is being highly monitored for any changes or indications. barring an earthquake, as long as the conservation schedule is kept up, they're fine

between this and the FSO Safer (another ship at serious risk of exploding) I’m convinced every field has its “yeah, this is the problem that keeps me up at night” and I’m on a quest to learn about all of them
yes yes we all know about the Edmund Fitzgerald, rest her soul, but did you know about the ship laden with explosives that sank in the mouth of the Thames in 1944 and could explode at any minute and which attempts to disarm keep failing

The Fitzgerald: nobody knows exactly why it sank

the Montgomery: we know exactly why and we know exactly how dangerous it is but every attempt to make it slightly less dangerous simply reveals a New and Exciting Danger that prevents access

I'm not sure if others have noticed this, but interesting that one of the Prescott criticisms of the BBC is based on those of the 'History Reclaimed' group, which is also associated with the 'Restore Trust' group's attacks on & so far unsuccessful attempts to take control of the National Trust. 1/3

Hearing a talking head say “Ending ACA Subsidies will lead to lower health care costs because companies won’t have government payments! It should lead to price transparency!”

This sounds a lot like “Some people are gonna die but it’s time to end the lockdowns” in 2020.

Your enemies are counting on you to lose hope. Despair is one of their greatest weapons, for it leads you to stop fighting for yourself. Hold on to hope, no matter how hard it is, and refuse to join your enemy in bringing you down.

Apropos of nothing in particular: SHOES

Per the FEMA training I took 30 years ago, the one thing that best ensures your survival in a disaster is whether you made it out of the building with shoes on.

Everything else can just be scrap-wraps, but shoes are high-tech. Put them on first, then run.

OK. Here's the thing. You just can't put on a jacket and pretend to be a security patrol in the UK. It's actually illegal. Who the actual F are these "Essex Spartans"? Government has laws and rules and they need to enforce them.

Some have suggested that the BBC should adopt the reply given in Arkell v Pressdram.

Alas, that only really works when you can stand by your journalism. But here the BBC mucked up.

BBC can defend and defeat this claim, if made. But it is in a less strong position than Private Eye was then.
