I'm going to say that putting the diacritical marks in "reënter" and "début" are some strong indicators that whoever wrote this is a real freak.

For real. And one of the main reasons why those Sunday pages were so good was that he made sure he had plenty of page space to make some really incredible art.

Newspaper comics have been on a steady decline since their heyday in the 1930's, I want to say. They got less and less page space, artists got paid less and less...it's slowly dying art!
