OH LOOK. Guess who said about 6, 7ish yrs ago that it felt like they didn’t want teachers anymore, but rather ‘facilitators to learning’ where screens did the teaching & people in the classroom only did behaviour management? Teacher autonomy is basically zero these days as it is, so glad I got out

I found out the hard way… not fun!

(Every ‘corrupted file’ I’ve had in .docx was fixed by opening the .odt, isolating the problem (the SAGException error message tells you where it is), deleting it/copy pasting the doc into new file. Never saving wips in docx ever again!!)

They tend to be fine - my biggest issue has been paragraphing, so don’t send final copies in odt, but wips work (I send my agent odt wips if docx is mucking around). The general rule is work in odt and save the final project you’re going to send out in docx - it’s under ‘save as’)

I’m looking into better editing tools because once you get into back and forth with track changes on with various editors, the formatting can get *wild* on mss and .docx gets easily confused (not necessarily Libre’s fault - software engineer hub’s is always cursing MS!), but in general Libre’s fine

I use Libre and have done for years (won’t touch Microsoft with a barge pole) - the biggest thing if you switch is don’t save in .docx, save in .odt as you work as it’s MUCH more stable. I nearly lost an entire novel due to a SAGException corruption error down to messed up formatting tags on a .docx

I spent a week only interacting with art posts and blocking all hate on sight - I literally had an entire page of 'you can't see this post' messages, greyed out boxes and no art. It was trying to show me blocked hate accounts! I think that's when I snapped. It wasn't me - it was the site.

I really should venture back on to threads, but that place got so bad… there are lovely people there, but the algorithm is *fucked*. No matter what I did to steer it from hate, it just kept dumping it on my feed- in the end, every other account on it was one I’d already blocked😬

Transworld has acquired horror-thriller crossover novel Maneater by debut author Ellie Graves. Editor Nicole Witmer acquired world rights from Sandra Sawicka at Marjacq.

The debut’s synopsis reads: "Maneater follows Renee Landis as she finally quits her dead-end job at a chicken shop after landing the coveted role of junior chef at London’s pristine NOVA restaurant. But it’s not the restaurant that draws Renee in – it’s the executive chef.

"Gracie Fitzgerald is as legendary as she is secretive, known for her succulent, signature dishes and the notorious methods in which she runs her kitchen. No one can touch her workspace with bare hands. No other chef can taste her signature dishes. And no one, under any circumstances, is allowed to enter her personal freezer…"

Sawicka said: "I am beyond thrilled to have worked on this deliciously dark novel with Ellie and Nicole, who are just a dream team. Can’t wait for the audience to sink their teeth into Gracie and Renee’s story."

Graves said: “I’m not sure I should admit to the amount of fun I had writing Maneater… it turns out, playing ‘I wonder how far you can push this?’ when it comes to food in horror is ‘quite far’!

Maneater will publish in hardback, e-book and audio in March 2026.

People get so weird about other people having preferences- I’m a huge found footage fan, and I keep quiet about that because so many people hate it! Like, leave me to my weird, stilted mockumentaries and urban legends and I’ll leave you to your colourful shrieking Italians and ketchup blood, okay? 😂

I love Dark with all my little weirdo heart (it helps that I understand German quite well- I used to spend a lot of time in Düsseldorf as a kid as my parents have friends who live near there, so while I have forgotten a lot of my Deutsch, I do know when the subtitles don’t match what they’re saying)

In a fit of pretentiousness, I once wrote a book (unpublished - had lots of complimentary rejections from very big publishers, basically ‘incredibly interesting but how the fuck do we market this??’) with the HoL inspired dedication ‘you have already read too much’

❤️😭 I’ve had so much grief in the past for admitting I don’t get on with giallo - I find it too overstimulating - but I love witchy stuff so I’ve always wanted to love Suspiria, which is why I think this remake works for me. It’s the story without the in-your-face-giallo-ness of the original!

It’s very colourful, involves singing, and an awful lot of squealing from the girls when certain characters are on screen. I don’t really get it

I’m terrible with telly. I have the attention span of a gnat, so it has to get real weird, real quick or I’m out 😅

I’m going to out myself here a bit, but I’m not an Argento fan, and I don’t like the original (I know, I know, it’s a classic, I just don’t get on with it at all), but I adore this remake.

I liked the first season when it first came out, because it was different and had tropes I like. My kids liked the others, because they’re kids and it was aimed at them. But even they’re sick to death of it (and they’ve got K Pop Demon Hunters now. Just… don’t ask)

(I didn’t watch GoT because I don’t do Rape As Entertainment, and after reading the first book and realising it was Politics Disguised as Fantasy By Adding Dragons I decided to go back to reading about people having their minds being turned inside out by ancient tentacle gods instead)
