Climate Action Team Manitoba (CAT) is a coalition of organizations working on advancing climate action and affordability in Manitoba (Treaty 1-5 and homeland of the Métis nation).
This morning, Deep Sky—a Montreal-based direct air capture (DAC) start-up founded by executives of the travel app Hopper and the former CFO of Airbnb—announced that it will build a major DAC facility in southwestern Manitoba.

Karina Cardona has asthma and a spinal cord injury, so she wasn’t able to breathe when the air quality was particularly bad. After a summer on fire, Manitoba needs a climate plan that protects what’s precious. Tell the MB govt to act now to protect what’s precious: climateactionmb.ca/plan-to-prot...

Many sacred annual ceremonies and community gatherings were cancelled this summer in Manitoba because of climate-change-fuelled wildfires. But this doesn’t have to be our new normal.

Chris Scott knows when you invest in transit, you invest in people. He's tired of seeing it underfunded. Public transit is a climate solution we want to see included in the province’s upcoming climate plan. Tell the MB gov't to act now to protect what’s precious: climateactionmb.ca/plan-to-prot...

Little Udatli reaches out to give her mom a high-five. Many children in Manitoba (Treaty 1-5 territory) spent a lot of the summer indoors because of toxic air quality caused by climate-change-fuelled wildfires. Write the MB gov't to tell them to act now to protect what’s precious: lnkd.in/gyDz3jUf

Manitoba is exploring a technology called Direct Air Capture (DAC) to reduce emissions. But there are major reasons to be skeptical about it.

Check out our new policy brief to learn more about what DAC is and why it isn't a climate solution we should bank on.

For sure - the buildings emissions in this chart are almost entirely from space heating.
June 26, 2025 at 4:55 PM
Here are the top 5 emitters when broken down by economic subsector:
1. Animal production: 3.3 Mt
2. Passenger SUVs, trucks & cars: 3.2 Mt
3. Crop production: 2.5 Mt
4. Freight trucks & rail: 1.8 Mt
5. Commercial & government buildings: 1.7 Mt

Together, these 5 sources make up 60% of MB's emissions!

Contact your MLA, Adrien Sala (Finance Minister) and @mlamikemoyes.bsky.social (Environment and Climate Minister) and tell them Manitoba needs a geothermal public utility to reduce home energy bills and transition off fossil fuels
April 17, 2025 at 1:21 PM
There are plenty of examples of working geothermal systems in Manitoba already. This can be a solution to Manitoba Hydro's electricity supply challenges. In order to make this more affordable, we need:
-A publicly-owned geothermal utility
-Investment from the provincial government.

Enter...geothermal heating and cooling systems! In order to take advantage of this renewable energy opportunity, we need government action!
-A publicly-owned geothermal utility (already floated by the Wab Kinew government during the last provincial election)
-Investment from the provincial gov't

There's been a lot of chatter about how to meet Hydro's supply challenges. This can be done without relying further on fossil fuels!
