WaPo thinks democracy is doing just fine.

Their high points and up notes are momentary flashes of strength and hope. I think they missed the broader, more persistent and programmatic corrosion and danger, particularly here at home.

RIP my mentions but costs for inference are falling very quickly and this probably won’t be true for long

It is eg in Google’s interest to make generative search responses just as cheap to deliver as current ones and given that every hyperscalar is building custom silicon for this, it’s coming
"A request made through ChatGPT, an AI-based virtual assistant, consumes 10 times the electricity of a Google Search"

This isn't a game. This is accelerated destruction via huge usage of power, water, resources etc. Stop using it - especially for messing about!!

AI has an environmental problem. Here’s what the world can do about that.
The sprawling data centres that house AI servers churn out toxic electronic waste and are voracious consumers of electricity, which in most places is still produced from fossil fuels.

I do that a lot on Instagram. If I don’t it just turns into one never-ending fight and I can barely use the app.

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people!!

No individual person has more than 3 or 4% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present on earth today.

Per the USGS, the quake took place along a steeply dipping thrust at a depth of 600 m—hence the tsunami alert, which has now been lifted.
