On 26 September 1580, Francis Drake's Golden Hind sailed into Plymouth with Drake and 59 crew aboard. Along with a rich cargo of spices and captured Spanish treasures, he had completed the first circumnavigation of the Earth by an Englishman.

School wasn't compulsory until 1880, the school year started in September to increase the likelihood of children attending because they were needed less as the harvest was over.
