oh yeah. similarly!! this is something related that i wrote in tumblr (op is not bigoted or the like. just asking abt the trope and how and why others write the characters that way):
tumblr reblog by me (soccerpunching). text: basing it on canon, i dont think kariya has ever had any gender bias on who he messes with (he never had any sexist streak so even if kirino was fem-presenting i dont think it would matter) but it has a lot to do with who makes him insecure (which he takes a lot from those who criticizes and whom he feels antagonized by). And what makes him insecure would be a comment on what he cares about the most: his soccer. he was like that with kirino because kirino gave kariya what he thought is helpful feedback regarding how he plays and kariya took this as antagonism and pushes it further by claiming that he's a SEED. it was pretty helpful imo and considering the high speed place that is a field during a soccer match, i understand why kirino opted to give the feedback in a short and (continuation) blunt manner (because he didn't think kariya plays a lot of soccer alone instead of being used to in a team that regularly communicates with each other inside and outside the field). that and add to the fact that kirino seemed to be leading the defense a lot (which kariya is a part of). him messing with kirino is a lot of part feeling like he doesn't belong because he has trust issues (this is also implied by hitomiko) and also because kirino the defense leader finds something wrong with his performance. from that you can say that kariya prefers antagonism from being pitied and being seen as weak (which are usually the reasons why one would want to be antagonized despite not doing anything harmful prior to that point). since he feels like kirino probably hates him (he doesn't) and maybe feels threatened of kariya (kirino doesn't), why not put this in the extreme? just to get back at him? this is the kind of character kariya is and although he was more tame after, he still had little moments of antagonism; the only difference now is that the team accepted that that's just how he is and rides with it and even levels with it.
