It depends on how a particular synthetic dataset is made/generated, which techniques are used. It’s in no way neutral either. In a way, the use of synthetic data only obscures the existing problems with data, not solves them.

I was once in Germany waiting for my train, when a man from the US approached me, pointed at a train bridge and asked “how it is so old and not rusty”. And I didn’t know what to say, maintenance maybe? They are being cleaned and changed when too much damage is done? How else?
