For out-of-faction models I just like to copy concept or box art colour schemes instead of making them up myself.

You cannot easily flip back and forth between pages held by fingertips in a pdf.

The lag while a high-art pdf refreshes after you scroll has a real impact on your short term memory - like changing rooms.

My favorite game has a rules wiki and it is way more approachable to reference during play.
