There's a similar thing going on in Battlefield. Tons of kids profess to love the franchise but want to get rid of vehicle warfare because their first shooter was BC2 on the 360 and don't understand that vehicles are a defining feature of the franchise.

Right now I'm looking for properly paying work since I'm likely not going to be admitted to any PhD programs this cycle. That's what I really want to do, but Trump is screwing up everything.

That's made finding other devs in not-javascript rather tough. If you're looking for any kind of mentorship, it's tough without already having a job in the space. It was tough for me when I first graduated. It got tougher after I lost my first full-time role. I could do either Java and C++.

I think part of it has to do with how much of the community became techfluencers and engaged more in brand-building than producing anything useful. The people putting their heads down in the OBS Studio repo weren't making dumb lists of tech crap to learn on youtube.

I think one of the things that really disillusioned me with "the tech community" from a professional perspective is how much of that community on social media is made up of people who aggressively don't want to learn how computers work. Instead, they're obsessed with frameworks programming trivia.
