those people… they like blood, y’know?
Canadian trans woman and horror fiction writer
I watched The Empty Man (2020), an overcomplicated horror movie that feels like it was written by someone who learned just enough about Tibetan Buddhism to really freak themselves out.

I watched We're All Going to the World's Fair and it's going to haunt me for a while.

Confirmed that the glitzy Tokyo casino nightclub in Enter the Void (2009) is the same one used in the A$AP Rocky video for l$d. It was called Club Ai but according to reddit it was renovated a couple of years ago and doesn't look like this anymore. Hallucinogens in Tokyo will never be the same.

for Sunday GORE matinee we watched Enter the Void (2009), an ambitious film about a western immigrant drug dealer in Tokyo who dies and floats through the aftermath of his life, following the sister he swore never to leave.

I rewatched Trainspotting and was surprised by how well it holds up. It's less bleak and less depressing than I remembered it being (although, y'know) and it has a kind of lighthearted whimsical energy that is sometimes funny and sometimes unsettling and sometimes both. A heroin classic.

Bring Her Back (2025) might be the best horror movie of the year, although I hadn't heard much about it.

It just goes that much further than anything else I've seen recently. It's an eerie, unsettling, uncanny mystery that escalates in shocking and terrifying ways until the very end.

I watched Influencer (2022) because Thailand and found it generally disappointing, but interesting in the ways it fails.

It's a horror thriller with a great premise (killing and replacing influencers) but it falls apart and its twists don't hit because all of its characters are flat caricatures.

You Weren’t Meant to Be Human by Andrew Joseph White is an excellent (though brutal) read, and an interesting transmasculine counterpart to Brainwyrms by Alison Rumfitt. Together they make a good pregnancy horror double bill.

A present came in the mail today. This is the first time I've ever held a book that has my name on the cover and my fiction inside it. Gonna chase this feeling.

I watched Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch: a movie about being a writer, internalized homophobia, and the disconnected relationship your body has with your mind. I think it is one of his best. A deeply unsettling film.

"Okay. Now, the first sentence is: "Homosexuality is the best all-around cover an agent ever had."

don't disturb me, I'm a writer and I'm doing very important work

I very much agree that we need style as much as premise in weird and speculative fiction, but I'm ambivalent about the idea that it will fix the problem identified here.

We watched Exhuma (2024) for our @allisfullofgore.bsky.social Sunday movie and it is a damn good horror movie that earns every second of its almost 2.5 hour runtime. A shamanic attempt to protect a family from a "grave calling" grandfather's ghost descends into something much, much darker.

I definitely got lucky on a couple of questions, and I did it twice so that I could answer all of the questions I could.

So, somewhere between A1 and B1

It should go without saying that this is not the definition of good art!

This is a recipe for seeming "artsy" and "deep" and "meaningful" while dodging all of the risks and responsibilities of being an artist, in the interest of chasing mass appeal and not alienating anyone.

It's motel art.

There has to be a difference between real art, and something that seems artsy.

There has to be a difference between provoking a reaction and having something to say.

There has to be difference between connecting the dots the creator left for you, and drawing something by yourself on dot paper.

extremely excited to see this found footage horror short, Amber Deer, in a theatrical showing next Saturday. It was produced and directed by my former sister-in-law, Amy Stewart and filmed here in New Brunswick, Canada.

Hallow Road (2025) is really impressive movie in a bottle, where we spend every second of the film with two parents rushing to reach their daughter, who crashed her car deep in the woods. We never see what is going on directly, and everything unfolds over speakerphone.

my literary travel bucket list now includes Girona, Spain, simply because many of Roberto Bolaño's short stories happen there.
