Really feeling like Fall outside these past few days, so I made a little friend to celebrate the season.
In the artwork Haunted by Cynthia Decker, a small ghost draped in a white sheet floats midair under a twilight-blue sky scattered with stars. The ghost is framed by the circular window of a dark, weathered structure, its edge surrounded by the twisted silhouettes of leafless trees reaching inward. The scene feels both spooky and gentle, this ghost isn’t haunting anyone, just quietly existing under the night sky. A soft play between innocence and eeriness captures the feeling of Halloween without menace, only mystery.

Fragmentary Forest ~ Our lives get interrupted in small ways all the time, but sometimes there's the big things - illness, grief, change that's hard to adapt to. It may feel like we're stopped in our tracks, but don't forget, the path picks up on the other side of the gap.
A serene forest glows in soft, golden morning light. Tall, straight trees rise high into a canopy of green, their trunks thick and weathered. But in the foreground, three large trees appear partially erased—their upper sections float mysteriously above the stumps, with chunks of bark and wood suspended in midair like scattered pixels. Between the broken trunks, delicate white daisies carpet the forest floor, swaying gently in the filtered light. A small bird perches on the edge of one fragmented stump, adding a quiet spark of life to the surreal scene. Family Tree ~ There's no such thing as a "normal" family. Everybody's weird, everybody struggles. At least you got your grandmother's leaves.

1 year ago, Hurricane Helene tore through Asheville, taking 108 lives and flooding homes, businesses, and the Marquee gallery under 16 feet of water. Last night, the rebuilt Marquee reopened, and it felt like all of Asheville showed up! A great new beginning for a resilient creative community ❤️

Half the front facade is gone and the building is blocked by slabs of the parking lot and debris from other nearby businesses. Image shows the interior entrance ramp of the Marquee Gallery,blocked by mud, trees, debris, and items from inside the gallery. The flooded river reached up to 16 feet, and a few colorful umbrellas that were hanging from the celing remain. This is the entrance ramp of the Marquee looking from the inside of the 50k sq foot gallery out to the parking lot. This was the night of the re-opening, one year after the flood, and the turnout of support was breathtaking. the ramp is filled with visitors, and the crowd stretches into the parking lot, waiting to come in. At the Marquee on opening night, the aisles were packed with people, but I managed to snap a picture of my booth in a relatively quiet moment.

Personal Growth ~ This was inspired by the people I met at my mother's senior community. Every one of them had reinvented themselves many times over. New careers, new hobbies. It's important we foster growth even in our later years, and remember we're never too old for new ideas.

Moving Day ~ Life spins on, picking us up and letting us off whether we asked for it or not. This image is how I think about the constancy of life changes and it reminds me that sometimes home isn't where you stay, but what you carry with you as you go.

This piece has never been one of the popular ones, but to me, it’s what I set out to create: romantic, nostalgic, and immersive. I wanted it to feel like a memory, where the flowers keep blooming, the lake reflects the sky, and the cozy house waits at the top of the hill.
In a meadow thick with tall grass and clusters of white wildflowers, an old white bicycle leans against a brick post beside an iron gate. A small bird perches lightly on the post, while behind it rises a rocky hill dotted with moss and greenery. Atop the hill stands a stately cream colored house with steep gables, tall chimneys, and warm sunlight glowing on its pale brick walls. The background is filled with lush green trees, their leaves catching the morning light, and beyond them a glimpse of calm water reflects the sky. The scene feels timeless, both abandoned and alive, a quiet romantic nature getaway.

"Time Out" is a place that doesn't forget. It's a portrait of emotional memory, of things that leave a mark.
Inside a crumbling stone house, sunlight filters through broken roof beams, casting sharp rays across the dusty, uneven wooden floor. Several floorboards have collapsed, revealing dark gaps beneath, while the weathered walls are covered in layers of graffiti. The largest scrawl, painted in bold black letters, reads “TIME OUT.” At the far end of the room, a single red rocking chair sits facing the corner, upright and empty. A shaft of light streams in from the open doorway next to the chair. Beyond the doorway, a faint view of the surrounding forest is visible, pale against the shadows inside. This image reminds us that some places hold memories, and not all of them are nice.

"Adrenaline Junkie" He may be slow, but he lives on the edge.
A worn stone cliff fills the left side of the image, stark against a wide open sky filled with drifting clouds. A distant landscape at the bottom of the image suggests we are at a very high elevation. From the cliffside grows a thick, twisted tree, its trunk bending downward and back up where bare branches reach toward the sky. At the bottom of the trunk's curve, no safety line, no net to catch him, a tiny snail is upside down, clinging to the underside of the tree, hanging high above the dizzying drop to the valley below. He's not going anywhere, he just does it for the rush. It's a daredevil moment where the smallest little dude becomes the boldest thrill seeker.

I met my neighbor who lives an acre away and we were laughing about how rarely we talk. They say “Good fences make good neighbors”. It's a phrase that baffled me as a child but makes just SO much sense now. I need my space and solitude, absolutely, but it's good to say hello every so often.
In "Neighbors" by Cynthia Decker, three small grassy islands sit close together in a calm, endless blue sea. The nearest island holds a large, yellow wooden house with a steep, dark roof. It has a lookout on the roof with a small telescope, a fenced vegetable garden bursting with neat rows of crops, and a small dock where a rowboat is moored. The middle island is a waypoint; smaller, with a single windswept tree at its center. The farthest island features another cozy house with a worn brown roof, a small fenced pasture where several brown cows graze, and a wooden dock with it's own rowboat moored alongside. Bright soft sand edges each island like a frame, and the scene is lit with the clarity of a summer morning, the ocean a deep blue, the sand a bright ivory, and the grassy homesteads a vibrant green. The image was inspired by the phrase "good fences make good neighbors", and is about bridging the distances between us while still maintaining healthy boundaries.

Bifrost Bridge by Cynthia Decker. A futuristic bridge stretches across calm, reflective water beneath a glowing galactic sky. The bridge is composed of symmetrical metal towers, each with intricate architectural details, and evenly spaced across the water like silent sentinels. In the distance, the bridge leads to a luminous stepped pyramid structure at the edge of a hazy cityscape, bathed in warm sunrise light. Above, a starry cosmos unfurls in vivid pinks and blues, with two massive planets hovering low over the horizon, one ringed and clouded like Jupiter, the other crescent-shaped. New Image: The Hoax

It's kind of amazing what we can ignore when the road is clear and the sun is shining, but sooner or later the flood of evidence will be overwhelming.
In the image "The Hoax", by Cynthia Decker, a white vintage pickup truck (a Chevrolet Apache, to be precise) drives across a white stone bridge that spans calm turquoise water under a sky of cottony clouds. In the lower half of the image, beneath the water's surface, the scene transforms: the arches of the bridge stretch deep into the water, revealing a submerged town of crumbling buildings, crooked power lines, and forgotten streets. The underwater street is eerie and dim, now populated by fish and a few plants, a ghost town hidden beneath the illusion of calm. Above, everything is pristine and serene. Below, only ghostly remnants of what once was. The truck rolls forward, oblivious, as if the world beneath no longer matters. It's a comment on climate change, and on the cost of looking away too long.

This is Franklin, and he is having A Nice Day.

I see black bears nearly every day in the summer. It's always lovely to see them lumbering by. I have been fatigued lately by the state of the world, and felt the urge to make an image about the sweetness of simple things. So I made "A Nice Day".

The bear is called Franklin, and he is perched atop the hill against a watercolor sky of pale blue and fluffy white clouds. Franklin has a very zen expression and is clearly having a very nice day. this is a closeup of Franklin in all his calm glory. Enjoying sunshine, nature, and his butterfly friends. He is just still, and in being still, he becomes part of everything around him. We could all learn from Franklin, I think.

For those who love to get lost in books 📖🛋️
StoryWorld by Cynthia Decker shows a bookcase with 4 horizontal shelves divided up into 12 sections. The bookcase is made from oak. In some of the sections, there are just books. But in others, the books in those sections have created little worlds on each shelf. In the top left, a rickety windmill spins at dawn next to a copy of Don Quixote. Top center, a marina at sunset with a docked sailboat, the dock leads to a book with a door in it, the book is about fishing, and the sign over the door says "bait shop". 2nd shelf on the left a gate and a hedge hint that this shelf is full of life. In the center, next to a book on art, a small easel has been set up and the french countryside can be seen beyond. 3rd shelf, on the left a paint horse peeks out while teepees can be seen in the American plains that stretch to the horizon. A hide teepee sits in the front of the shelf, just next to a book on Native America. The center shelf has some very early Wizard of Oz storybooks, and a yellow brick road leads between the books, through a poppy field. Surrender Dorothy is written in clouds in the sky. On the right section, an old book about arctic excursions is home to a mother and baby polar bear, who stand on the snow covered books stacked next to it. The bottom shelf holds travel books, and in the center, the book on Japan has spawned a garden with an ornate gate, beyond which you can see a large cherry tree in bloom and Mt. Fuji in the background. I have always loved books and the escape they brought me as a child. This image is my love letter to all of them.

Between the Cracks, 2012
This image by Cynthia Decker is called "Between the Cracks" it was made in 2012. It shows a closeup of a white plaster wall with a large horizontal crack across the wall, at the top 1/3 of the image. Some gravel/dirt is in the low foreground, and an opportunistic sprig of grass and an big dandelion have grown up at the edge of the wall. some chunks of plaster are missing from the crack itself, and inside the crack a small village can be seen. Simple houses made of simple materials, a ladder reaching to the second floor can be seen near the center of the image. Along the length of the crack other houses and signs of life can be seen in the shadows. This image is about the people we overlook, the situations conveniently forgotten, and the small natural worlds we fail to notice.

Sometimes I make physical miniature dioramas of my images. Check comments to see what I made for this image, "Rise Above".
"Rise Above" by Cynthia Decker shows a very tiny house in a desolate landscape. The image shows the front of the small building, with it's peeling painted horizontal slat siding and a long forgotten stone walkway to the front door. The door has a glass window with a curtain behind it, tucked between the curtain and glass is a sign that says "Come In, We're Open". The surrounding landscape is post apocalyptic, with a dark sky in shades of gray and brown. Piles of rubble and ruined buildings can be seen in the background. The tiny house, however, is not lost to its grim surroundings. The little building has a mossy roof that is overflowing with wildflowers; a riot of white queen ann's lace, hot pink and purple lupins, orange wild marigolds, and lush greenery adorn the worn building like a crown.

Always love seeing my artwork in my collector's homes. This couple told me that "Personal Growth" resonated so strongly with them on their Asheville visit they couldn't head home without it. <3 They sure gave it a lovely spot!

It's set against a textured gradient background in shades of soft teal, dark and the bottom and getting lighter toward the top. The top half of the bust's head is missing, and in its place is a grassy hillside with a small forest of trees growing up out of it. Very small birds can be seen flying over the treetops.

Any Port in a Storm
Any Port in a Storm, by Cynthia Decker. A wine glass sits on a worn wooden table. It's surrounded by other wine glasses of different shapes and sizes, the wall behind them is plain aged plaster. The scene is lit with a wash of soft reddish gold light and backlit in gray green tones. A crumpled white linen napkin sits on the table behind the glasses. The largest glass in front is just under half filled with a ruby red wine. Over the glass is a singular stormcloud, raining furiously into the glass and turning the surface of the wine into the wild foam tipped waves of a storm. A small fishing vessel is cresting the wave inside the glass, weathering the storm.

"Locked Out"
"Locked Out" by Cynthia Decker This image was about choices for me, and how sometimes too many options can be just as stifling as too few. A tiny house, worn from time and weather, sits on an island in the middle of a vast shallow reflective sea. Clouds from a passing storm roll away in the distance. Low afternoon sun shines on the face of the house, washing it in a soft cool gold light. The house has one door and one window in the front, both long unused. The siding is horizontal strips of wood, worn and peeling. The house is wrapped in chains, to prevent entry (or exit?). Many large chains of diffferent sizes are strung taut around the tiny hut, and they are locked together in points with huge padlocks. The island that the house sits on is a pile of keys. Thousands upon thousands of brass and nickel keys. A tiny worn dock juts out into the shallow clear water. Under a small ripple in the clear water's surface you can see the bottom, also just keys, as far as they eye can see.

Love What You've Done With the Place
~difficult times can bring beautiful changes~
The image shows a high, nearly overhead view of the grand salon of an old mansion. Once sparkling and luxurious with high ceilings, large white columns and millwork, ornate windows and a parquet wood floor, time and nature have taken over. The floor is now about 10 inches under water that can be seen streaming in through the long broken window panes. The floor of the salon has become a tranquil lily pond, filled with thriving lily pads and gorgeous blossoms. Koi fish can be seen swimming in the clear water. In the center of the image, a plush and ornate red velvet upholstered chair sits, gold leaf trim catching a ray of light coming in the window. It is a flower in it's own way, a testament to the beauty of what was becoming a part of the beauty of the present.

"Aspirations"
The calm blue sky is always there, sometimes you just have to work a bit to find it.
Aspirations by Cynthia Decker In this image, a rustic and worn down house, cozy and charming but definitely has seen better days, sits atop a grassy hill. A storm front, dark and ominous, sits over the house and it's raining. Above the clouds is clear blue sky. A woman has attached a ladder to her chimney and has climbed up above the stormfront, and is looking out into the clear air, shading her eyes with one hand while holding on to the top rung of the ladder. Her dog is in the yard, looking up at her and waiting for her to return from out of the clouds. he sits near a laundry line, in the thick grass. Visually the image is divided into thirds, the top is clear blue sky, the center is dark clouds and the house, largely black and neutral, and the bottom is the green grassy hill. This is my interpretation of the idea that the peace of a calm sky is always there, even when you're caught in storms. Sometimes you just have to do a little work to find it.
