2) his return mate career, and Gary Cohen musing that we last saw him as the wide-eyed kid, now as the grizzled veteran, but we missed everything between.

This may be unreasonably lionizing the side I'm on now, but it seems worse from the right; there are a ton of people on the right who delight in "owning the libs"; I don't see a corresponding movement on the left to do things deliberately to upset conservatives

I think you know that Leonard was a Republican growing up in the 1980s, and even voted for Bob Dole. Probably for W too, but that was the last one.
I may be deluding myself, but I feel it was more justifiable back then. You could squint and not see the racism if you chose to not look.
