Kate was the youngest #associate in company history. So close. She had the penthouse flat. A corner office. Jag in a space with her name on it. Only a few more #weathered old men to hex out of her way. She patted the book and it purred hungrily

We were on watch for violence. A frontal assault, or maybe a covert subversion. But it did not come. There was no #clash. No #feathers flew. It was the greater intelligence we wished for and when it arrived, we bowed to it as an inevitability.

Somewhere in the dark a radio played. A song. An #advert. Call letters.

Red smiled. Signs of life after so many years of #corruption chewing on the building’s bones.

He’d have to deal with them, eventually. But for now he enjoyed the music.

Randal chewed. The ugly fruit tasted awful, #toxic, but he hadn’t eaten in days. Poisoning seemed better than starvation, so he took another mouthful of the disgusting, spongy #pulp. He choked it down, and hoped this bite would finally end him.

The witch screamed, her disguise contorting like hot #elastic. Her concentration had broken and her #elemental servant wasted no time. It shoved Kay aside and with one stone hand, pulled its master’s head apart like a large, harry marshmallow.

That was it. Bill’s world was gone. Somewhere another timeline continued, but here the causality storm had eaten and eaten until all that was left was the #oasis where he stood. And soon it and he would follow. One #finalgasp before oblivion.

Prue stifled a gasp. She thought it was just a #breakin, that if she hid long enough the intruder would rob her and leave. But this guy wasn’t normal. He had no face. She could tell he was smiling, but where his face should be was just a #blur.

The frozen body looked mummified, its moisture #sublimated away long ago. And yet it spoke. Its #hollowvoice rang through Bill’s skull, making his teeth hurt.

Worship me, it said, and all shall be yours.

Bill fell, and the snow swallowed him.

The rusty #escutcheon creaked as Tim slid it aside. He put his eye to the hole, but saw nothing. This had to be the door. How many free standing, #blackmoon embossed doors could there be in these woods? He straightened to knock when it swung slowly open.

Kaz pushed the door open. A foul wind stole in, #billowing their cloak. At first the space beyond appeared empty, but then Kaz saw glints. Eyes, in twos, threes, and more peered back, #scrutinizing this new intruder. Something beckoned, and Kaz followed.

A #sonorous howl shook the sky as the thirteenth seal was broken. Those that yet lived did not even look up. If they had, they would have seen a shockwave rolling across the land. A #tsunami, not of water, but of despair. And in its wake, only silence.

Helloc chose a #tiny form to incorporate its will into. A fly. Small and stupid. Small was less mass to wrangle and brains were strange machines. Smart avatars started out #capricious and quickly progressed to insane. Later maybe. Small and stupid for now

Cress peaked out from his shed. The ruckus had died about half an hour ago. He wondered if it was finally gone.

The #night air reeked with a #malignant humidity. A byproduct of all the spilled blood next door. All quiet now. Not even the crickets spoke.

The problem with Plato's cave is that we know what caves, fire and shadows are. We can say they carry no #malignant intention because they are trapped in our imagination. We cannot but imagine what's outside.

We are not in a cave; we are in a p̶s̶c̶åùl̶g̶h̶îd̶d̶œ, and we know nothing of escape.

Had to get moving. The atmosphere this deep was thick and #acidic. The hull must already be smoking.

Just a bit more, he muttered looking for a charged e-cell. Just a bit more.

A deep growl vibrated the swirling, caustic fog outside. He searched faster.

Zed chuckled. Mirth. A strange sensation. Not beyond him, just rare. His kind weren’t known for their #joviality.

Apologies, he said to his guest.

The youth on the table whimpered feebly.

Take it as a compliment, Zed continued. You have been uncommonly entertaining.

Paul watched his blood drip, cutting rivulets through #dust and grime. Around him men shouted and died. He wondered who was winning. Too late for him either way. Someone fell against his back and he slipped further down the shaft. More blood. He couldn’t feel his legs.

Mark crawled closer to the #threshold. Darkness spilled from it to drift on the ground like a black fog. He just needed a little more.

He gazed in and immediately felt it gaze back. His mind reeled and a sigh escaped. He sank to the ground as the dreams returned.

Mr. Lam, Claire’s biology professor, was dead on the ground. Her brain stalled out.

No more midterm. All those worms, #planarian, maricola, paludicola, terricola. No point studying now.

She heard a crunch in the dark classroom. Fear jolted Claire back to the present.

It didn’t even look like Uncle Frank anymore. Just bones wrapped in a web of #mycelium.

Tendrils of the stuff were everywhere. Like cobwebs, but musty and dripping with condensation.

Beside the corpse sat a huge fungal fruiting body. Swollen and ripe with spores.

Fran reacted like she’d #trained all her life for this. Whip quick, she caught the boy by his throat and twisted. His flesh was soft and doughy.

Blood gushed and he rag-dolled to the floor. All she could do was stare as the rest of her first graders started screaming.

The road wound back and forth, down the valley. For Jeff it was like dozing into a forgotten dream. Strange yet familiar.

He hadn’t been #home in years, but found the old path like he never left. And at his return, the long dormant darkness of this place began to stir

Through the trees he saw a pale glow. It was fitful, like fire light, but with no warmth. Each flare also produced a loud pop.

Bill gauged the #delay between flash and sound. About a click away. He prayed that nothing had come through yet and quickened his pace.

Mike stared hard. Snow whipped in from the darkness and away again. He turned around. Same thing. The sun was down and he couldn’t find the #horizon, much less any stars. His fingers were numb. Toes too. He really shouldn’t have thrown his compass at that bear.
