We've been banging repsils into us at an awful clip. Paracetamol. Lemsip. You name it. We think it's been two different but similar things one after th other.

I mean I certainly wouldn't disagree that there has been plenty of times in the intervening 30 years that this might have been raised but it is also happening now in a specific context and not all of it is about solidarity with Gaza, and that shouldn't be hard to say.

But isn't there also an issue that say, this hasn't been something people wanted until _right_ now, a critical mass against it that is happening at precisely the same time as Jews all over Europe are facing more discrimination? There was ample time in the last 30 years to see Israel as problematic.

I think really that by making the denaming about now & current Israeli policy rather than say it being a reassessment of Herzog himself as such as a historical actor, is problematic and it does invite the possibility for those who wish to do so to conflate antizionism with antisemitism.

Vanishingly small community in Ireland, that they also are part of things. Ireland's history with Jews is vexed to put it mildly. I recommend @brian-hanley.bsky.social recent letters in History Ireland as a good place to gauge current temperature of things.

This was my experience with the LRB which I had for 2-3 years. Good writing tends to hold, obviously, on most topics. I've had an offer of New Yorker for an Xmas gift but don't want to end up months behind

Neither title really suggests the original. «Et juleeventyr» is also the translation of A Christmas Carol: ”A Christmas Adventure". «Når kjerkeklokka slår» is "When the church bells ring."

A more egregious effort is that translated by Trygve Skaug a kind of instagram "poet" who writes terribly anodyne stuff. His translation turns it into someone giving up the booze and being saved by the Salvation Army! Recorded by Lewi Bergrud.
