AI would advance even if OpenAI disappeared. AI really actually does powerful things that will transform a lot of how we live and work even if AI did not advance further. The way to influence the future is not to pretend that AI is going to go away, but push for it to be used well & mitigate harms.

"In 2030, AI in data centers specifically will be using 0.08% of America’s freshwater. This means it will rise to the level of 5% of America’s current water used on golf courses, or 5% of U.S. steel production, or be about 173 square miles of corn farms."

My biggest frustration with ChatGPT is that it can do amazing things in Agent mode, it can do amazing things in Developer mode, and it can do amazing things in custom GPTs ... but it won't let you combine any of them to do the one big thing you really want it to do!

Google Gemini has the worst training opt-out for consumers of any of the big players

Claude doesn't train on your data at all, OpenAI & Grok let you turn off training, but you can only turn off training for Gemini if you also disable your chat history

(They don't train on edu or business accounts)

I had access to GPT-5. I think it is a very big deal as it is very smart & just does stuff for you

This is “make a procedural brutalist building creator where i can drag and edit buildings in cool ways" & "make it better" a bunch. I touched no code

AI's not just power-hungry. It's also thirsty.

"The first time he saw the data, Mr. Manganiello said his 'eyes popped.' One data center company was asking for nine million gallons of water a day, equal to 30,000 households. 'It is a tremendous amount,' he said."

I still think often about the original concept video for Google Glass (which, conspicuously, never shows the user wearing a Google Glass)... the modern pitch isn't all that different, even if the tech itself has gotten more fashionable: www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-qj...

My kid's high school requires some assignments to be hand-written to deter the use of LLMs. So yeah, I get the frustration.
Now it's the professors using ChatGPT. Students aren't happy about it.

I talked to professors. I talked to students. I read the scathing reviews on Rate My Professors.

o3 now one-shots extremely New Yorker-y original New Yorker cartoons, and sometimes the punchlines are actually kind of okay.

And most of them involve therapists or cellphones or both, which feels very on-brand.
