Whatever production time and cost was "saved" by using AI for one of the most human-dependent disciplines in game making was actively obliterated by the act itself, overshadowing the hard work of every single other developer on the project and making this situation impossible to right. WHO KNEW.

Anyway I’m sure there’s absolutely nothing noteworthy about the fact that the consenting voice actors for Arc Raiders aren’t known or named and they aren’t talking at all about how proud they are to be involved with such a popular title.

A nice nuanced review that speaks to the differences between system AIs (those we've had in games since almost their dawn) and gen AI (creating a Frankenstein mess of the voice performances). A worthwhile read and a very interesting review.

For the Arc Raiders AI VA debacle, people are already pointing out that they boast an substantial number of ping-related voice lines.

Heads up for folx playing Arc Raiders: Embark has openly stated (in an interview with GamesRadar+), that the game uses the same AI voice tech as The Finals, and the CEO has talked about using AI to generate 3D models from YouTube rips.

If you're anti-AI you should not be playing Arc Raiders!

Not to be the fun police but I do hope people know that Arc Raiders does use generative AI for voice acting, and by supporting the game you're letting higher-ups know that this is an okay practice.

They try to downplay this on the Steam store page by describing the AI usage as vaguely as possible.

I get that it's a more "ethical" use of AI, and that the voice actors agreed to it beforehand, but it still leaves me icky when the express purpose is so that they don't have to have the actors come in for future recording sessions. I'd rather they just don't use the tech at all

That is, we hire and contract voice actors for it - it's part of their contract that we use it [AI] for this purpose, and that allows us to do things like our ping system, where it's capable of saying every single item name, every single location name, and compass directions.
