who your relatives are doesn't really factor into it, in my opinion

fwiw (and sorry for the unprompted opinion ^^;) I personally believe that people generally don't owe their parents anything. My stance is that if you wouldn't spend time with your relatives if they weren't related to you, you shouldn't spend time with them.
