FROM THE MANGER TO THE CROSS was shot in location in Egypt and Palestine. It was written by Gene Gauntier, who also played the Virgin Mary, and possibly co-directed.

The role of women in getting epics onto the American screen has been erased, so let's elevate them again.

It's Matthew Paris time!

That's right: 13th century England's premier mapmaker and monk! A friend to kings, & the kind of man who could draw an elephant right.

He drew the first maps of England (like the one below) and he's the subject my December bonus newsletter:

The book The Long Game is also completely sold out online, as far as I can tell, which confirms the huge blunder on the part of the publisher for the show's release this past weekend.
Heated Rivalry is #2 on HBO Max's top 10 list. That seems like a pretty big deal and I hope that means they'll greenlight a second season.

1 DECEMBER 1775, ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS: The enlistments of the Continental Army’s Connecticut regiments expire. Washington has ordered them to remain at their posts until they can be replaced, but many desert anyway. Washington calls it “extraordinary and reprehensible conduct.”

Asa West spent years trying to find a strange fantasy film she'd glimpsed as a child–finally tracking it down was a revelation, not just about the film itself, but about how weird, ambitious art falls in and out of fashion
I Tracked Down the Film that Traumatized Me as a Kid, and Found a Forgotten Gem - Reactor
Weird, ambitious art — the kind that sticks with you for decades — is always worth searching for.

Lethality is not something you use or do, but Senator Plumber’s Butt is not particularly smart. That said, Secretary Violent Zipper Malfunction’s constant referencing of lethality is a direct reaction to conventional troops being forced to do COIN in Iraq & Afghanistan. 1/
Markwayne Mullin: "The president and the secretary of war have been very clear. They're gonna use lethality against our enemies -- home and abroad."

Speaking as someone who was cast as "alarmist" for accurately predicting the GOP mainstreaming of outright fascism, that sort of attitude is the flip side of those earlier alarmism accusations.

These folks are so petrified of change and the unknown that they wishcast a permanent status quo.
The main thing that's annoying and offensive about this is it's usually not framed as simply a factual observation about all the obvious hurdles, as if anybody needs reminding. It's how it's said in a mood of cynical, condescending hostility to even advocating for accountability. Ditto impeachment.
While this usually isn't the intent, "no one will ever be held accountable for this" doomerism is an excuse not to try.

There'll be at least some accountability if enough Americans work for it. And this time really is different. Doesn't guarantee the aftermath will be, but it increases the chances.
