THIS MOP AND BUCKET are poetry to me. My pen is a mop I stick in a bucket of disinfectant floor cleaner pull out mop sodden with words and splash them backwards and forwards slop lines one after the other Until the floor fair shines, My mop is dry, needs another dip. I squeeze out the gunk back into the bucket. More the floor shines, dirtier the bucketful gets. A good poem is a clean floor

I’m typically fairly responsible.

Until the data suggest high aurora potential. Then I drop everything and go, forgetting mittens and to lock my house and eat dinner. I drive recklessly on dark unfamiliar roads for a closed park to stand 5 hours in the dark by myself. But… look at those lights!

This is my last and longest of three aurora threads, for the final substorm I saw from Columbus Ohio USA. It was by far the most brilliant and the strongest (at one point visible *south* of us)! It started ~11:30PM local time and lasted a full half-hour. Just unbelievably stunning!

Brilliant bands of aurora lights in the sky above a lake. There is an arc of soft green coming from the lower left, and a brilliant band of bright red above it. The two arcs meet toward the right of the photo, where they mix to make an orangish color. Behind them the sky is purplish. An almost comet-shaped blob of light fills the entire sky, terminating in a rounded tip toward the right of the frame, above an elated photographer standing on a dark dam near a cold gray lake. The colors that make up this blob are bright yellow-green and bright red, mixing together to form orange and other colors. It is stunning. You can almost hear the people in the photo whooping for joy. A mess of bright red and wispy yellow-green fills the entire sky above a gray lake, brilliant aurora with no pattern, rhyme, or reason. Two aurora bands in the sky, looking like they’ve been painted with vertical brush strokes even though the bands run horizontally. On the bottom is a soft green band. On top is a brilliant red band. They are almost touching in the center of the frame.

hung out with some beetle people, mentioned fairy shrimp, and they mentioned a specialist ground beetle which is a fairy shrimp predator. how can you know that much of the story and then not know the best part, which is that the beetles only hunt at night because the shrimp GLOW IN THE DARK

As it’s Armistice Day, I wanted to share an image of one of the most astonishing things I’ve ever seen in an archive:
This is the pen which ended the First World War.
It was used by British Admiral Rosslyn Wemyss to sign the Armistice on the 11th November 1918 in the Forest of Compiègne.
