Second, Trump has the classic "Mafia mentality" that I've remarked on before, and will be familiar to any New Yorker who has paid attention. In the Mafia mindset, the only question is who is with you and who is against you. Those who are with you, who are loyal and pay respect, benefit from largesse and generosity and protection. Those who are against you, who are disloyal and disrespectful, are to be destroyed, with no constraints on how. Of course, you can't destroy all your enemies all the time, so when necessary you do business with them, until the opportunity presents itself to exact revenge. Because those who are part of the "in group" are beneficiaries of the boss's largesse, they invariably idolize him. Some readers who are old enough will recall the mafia boss John Gotti, who thrived on media attention and showy displays, and who survived numerous prosecutions (it turns out mainly through witness and juror intimidation and bribes), before finally dying in jail. I will never forget in the late 1980s, at the height of Gotti's power, a reporter was interviewing a young Mom with her baby in the stroller in Gotti's Bensonhurst neighborhood in Brooklyn. She was a big fan of Gotti; as she put it, "Thanks to him our neighborhood is safe." Undoubtedly this was true: it would be an imprudent criminal who plied his trade where the consequence for infraction was death and dismemberment. The moral myopia of the in-group permitted the new Mom to ignore the fact that crime and misery elsewhere was due to the same man: what mattered was she and her baby were safe. There is no doubt Trump has the Mafia mentality (if one doubts it, see the choice quote here: "I love to remember my enemies and I love to get my enemies whenever I can, absolutely. … So many people that were enemies of mine were wiped out, and I do not really care about that." ). Again, this mentality is dangerous in a mobster with guns, but dangerous at a world-historical level with access to U.S. military might.

Then, in March 2020, an arm of the U.S. government first publicly presented Cartel de los Soles as an actual drug trafficking organization led by Mr. Maduro. That’s when the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, during the first Trump administration, obtained an indictment of Mr. Maduro and several officials in his government on drug trafficking and corruption charges. The indictment contained accounts of many alleged actions that would support those charges, drawing on witnesses and evidence gathered in a yearslong investigation. But it also laid out a narrative that this was not just a criminal conspiracy, but the activities of Cartel de los Soles. The drafting of the indictment was overseen by Emil Bove III, then a terrorism and international narcotics unit prosecutor in New York. Mr. Bove went on to be a defense lawyer for Mr. Trump and ran the Justice Department in the opening months of the second Trump administration. He had a turbulent tenure, including firing dozens of officials and ordering the dismissal of bribery charges against Mayor Eric Adams of New York, before he was rewarded with a judicial appointment.

The emails are like a portal back to a lost Manhattan power scene. Mr. Epstein’s inbox was larded with boldface names — many of them now faded or forgotten — that once meant everything to status-obsessed New Yorkers. It was the world that Donald Trump came out of, and the one that Mr. Epstein had so effectively beguiled after having grown up in a middle-class household in Coney Island. As the emails stretch through the years, they show how that protected realm vanished into the mists of time, pulled under by the rising forces of the internet and the #MeToo movement. Mr. Epstein and some of his male correspondents seem to squirm as they notice society changing around them.

According to Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, the man who was detained is from Guinea, illegally entered the United States in 2021 and was ordered removed by an immigration judge in 2024. She added, in part, "When our heroic law enforcement officers conduct operations, they clearly identify themselves as law enforcement while wearing masks to protect themselves from being targeted by highly sophisticated gangs like Tren de Aragua and MS-13, criminal rings, murderers, and rapists."

Ms. Halligan, who took over on Monday after her predecessor quit rather than prosecute James B. Comey with what he believed was insufficient evidence, had a little trouble with the first two tasks. At one point, she entered the wrong courtroom. When she found the right one, she stood on the wrong side of the judge, then appeared confused about the paperwork she just had signed.
