Remembering Alberto Ascari, born #OnThisDay in 1918, underrated today IMHO. He raced 32 GPs, winning 13, plus 2 world titles. The pic I’ve selected shows in stark detail the to-our-modern-eyes extraordinarily skimpy protection afforded to the drivers of early-’50s GP cars.

#OnThisDay in ’29, in this Bugatti T35B, William Grover-Williams won the first ever #MonacoGP; the 100 laps took 4 minutes under 4 hours. Later he became a hero of the French Resistance during WW2, & was executed by the Nazis at Sachsenhausen in ’45.

We're sad to hear about the death of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur. Our condolences to his family and friends. Our photo from our Motoring Picture Library shows Eddie with drivers Rubens Barrichello and Eddie Irvine in 1994.
