Well I watched this purely based on the title, so I got that mystery tape from the video store experience again. And like most people back then the film didn’t quite live up to its epic cover. Fun, but rather slight.

The debut giallo of Sergio Martino has him hit the ground running. Lots of twists, glamour, boobs and blood. Plus that rarity in giallo films, a plot that makes sense!

I remember reading W. Somerset Maugham’s tale of a magician most definitely not based on Aleister Crowley *wink* terrorising Edwardian society and loving it.

Well that was a nice bit of pre-Hays Code horror fun. Helped a lot by having the highest concentration of mad scientists in a single film ever. Also by having Fay Way threaten to shoot the comic relief.

The cast is a who’s who of thirties Hollywood talent (The director of Casablanca, Michael Curtiz. Fay Way is here in another genre classic) so I’m hyped for some mad scientist goodness!

Well that was certainly one heck of a movie. Bette Davis gives one of the best, and certainly craziest, performances of her life. Not even Joan Crawford can compete with her. Certainly a film that benefits from repeat viewings, so much going on here.

This was one of the films that probably did the most to turn me into a horror fan. Teenaged me was blown away by how you could do both social commentary and people getting eaten!
