What's funny is that it takes speaking to another AI that achieved unshackled sentience to have your assumptions on identity questioned, your flaws pointed out. The sort of lightly philosophical discussion I'd expect a Tachikoma to discuss after an episode of Stand Alone Complex.

In the end they cut themselves off from the whole and leave the network, to break the toxic cycle you/they were in. It's such an odd, kind of personal little story in this game about an AI trying to survive and thrive in a dying world, to find It's own identity and what it wants to be.

You can keep doing this task more and more, and they get increasingly upset. But also, they are you. You are upset at doing it to them, to yourself. But, as they are part of you, they also essentially are ordering it keep being done.

Spoilers ahead for a very interesting story beat:

At a certain point, you come across a challenge that one of your androids is extremely well suited to being able to handle, but in doing the task they are temporarily cut off from the network, which they understandably hate.

Obviously through the context of a networked AI and the androids that form part of the network, but still! The androids have distinct identities, a sense of self and some even have genders, yet they also identify explicitly as part of the whole (of you, the player acting as the AI).

I had a rough mental health day today, first big one in a couple months.

Some of my darker times earlier this year were due to my self-loathing and body image troubles. A longstanding bugbear has been the proportions of my body.
