I regrettably missed your article when it was first published, but discovered and analyzed it last month while exploring monographs that took a transnational approach for a paper assignment in my foundations class. So, it was still very fresh in my memory when Elder Brown spoke.

Listening to Kevin Brown’s talk in General Conference reminded me of @ccjones.bsky.social’s excellent article on early Latter-day Saint missionary efforts in Jamaica. Early missionary attitudes towards Jamaicans juxtaposed with Brown’s conviction of the gospel leave much to reflect upon.

The video in the link claims that for the past 60-70 years, America’s brilliance in education dimmed. Interesting argument considering Brown v. Board of Education was decided in 1954, which was just over *checks notes* 70 years ago.

Reading “The Chinese Must Go” for class one day and then hearing about 450 S. Koreans being detained in GA the next really hits home at how dystopian everything feels. And that’s before taking into account today’s SCOTUS decision lifting the stay against immigration raids in LA.

Spending my Labor Day preparing for class when I came across this in my readings. There’s some real Hunger Games vibes going on there, and reading this on a day set aside to celebrate labor unions and the working class makes it especially salient. “The Monied Metropolis” by Sven Beckert, pg. 255
A screenshot from “The Monied Metropolis” by Sven Beckert. A highlighted portion reads: “Starting in 1898, annual Christmas feedings for the poor in Madison Square Garden attracted the rich and powerful, who would sit in the galleries and private boxes staring down at the city's lower sorts (a full 20,000 of them) who ate below them.”

I’m tired of children continuing to be placed on a sacrificial altar to appease the false god that is the NRA. I’m tired that we continue to offer nothing more than thoughts and prayers to a God that continually weeps because we refuse to do anything about it.

Minneapolis Catholic school shooting survivor describes how friend saved his life: "I'm praying for you"
"My friend Victor like, saved me though. Because he laid on top of me. But he got hit," said fifth grade student Weston Halsne. "I was super scared for him. But I think now he's OK."

Watching video today of ICE agents roaming the streets of American cities and reading about the anger and fear of Bostonians during the Fugitive Slave crisis is a reminder of why it is so important that the institutions charged with interpreting the past be allowed to do so without interference.

I don’t think anything better exemplifies the current historical landscape than the episode from King of the Hill’s new season where everyone ignores Hank’s efforts to share historical tidbits about George Bush because they are too busy listening to Dale’s wild conspiracy theories.

When my wife was a teacher all she asked for Christmas or her birthday were supplies for her classroom, and we spent almost every Friday night grading her students’ papers. She eventually had to stop teaching because it was more expensive to have our son in daycare than for her to stay home.

Maybe. I gave up after 5 min when I realized the whole premise was about a guy pretending to be a lawyer despite never taking the bar or even graduating law school.

Next time just give him a taste of his own medicine and watch a couple episodes of Suits together.

I'm confused by the pile-on. Having read the book, I think it's pretty clear that his intended audience is to make history accessible to lay RDR2 fans who have never studied history or read a book. Yeah, it will never be assigned reading in a college course, but I don't think that is his goal.

"flight manifests for 3 legally contested deportation flights from Texas to El Salvador contain dozens of additional, unaccounted for passengers than a previously published Department of Homeland Security (DHS) list of people deported from the United States on those flights, 404 Media has learned."
Flight Manifests Reveal Dozens of Previously Unknown People on Three Deportation Flights to El Salvador
Hacked data obtained by 404 Media reveals dozens more people on deportation flights to El Salvador who are unaccounted for. “We have not heard from these people’s families, so I think perhaps even they don’t know," one lawyer said.

This reminds me of my LDS (Mormon) pioneer heritage. Except my ancestors fled to Utah to escape the US after their leader was murdered, and where the federal govnt spent the next 50 years persecuting them until they abandoned their religious practices. So what heritage are they referring to?
Post from Homeland Security with the caption “Remember your Homeland’s Heritage” over a painting of a white man and woman holding a baby in the back of a covered wagon, with another covered wagon in the background. The painting is “New Life in a New Land” by Morgan Weistling.

It’s amazing how many states are doing everything they can to win first place in the race to the bottom.

Great piece by @marthasjones.bsky.social. It highlights why the recent SCOTUS decision is so problematic while also underscoring why originalism is such a terrible legal theory in both its reasoning and application.

Utah deserves better than Mike Lee. His comments concerning the horrific shootings in MN were disgusting and unbecoming for both a senator and, most importantly, a Latter-day Saint.
