Holy shit this is some *intense* both sidesing.
Why were the Mormons regarded as the Industrial Workers of the World would be two generations later: as a subversive menace to civil society? Perhaps because the ideas and beliefs the early Mormons espoused were in their own way as deviant and dangerous as the revolutionary ideology the IWW preached. In the age of the rising, pre–Civil War market economy and what Smith disparaged as its presiding society of “bankers, lawyers, and businessmen,” the Mormons advocated collective ownership of property. They saw no need to separate the functions of church and state. And most notoriously, they held that plural marriage was fundamental to attaining salvation. (Smith took at least thirty-three wives, and Brigham Young, his successor as prophet, married fifty-five women, including seven or more of Smith’s widows.) Only Indians were more intolerable to Jacksonian America. As John McCormick writes of the early Mormons, “They were theocratic in a democratic society. They were polygamous in a monogamous society. And they were utopian socialists in an emerging capitalistic order.”

If anyone in central Indiana is looking for a new friend, I met this heartbreaking little sweetheart tonight who's having trouble finding a home. She was very excited for some company and really liked gumming my fingers.

There is a strange hand skritching her head. Winry has a long history with us. She came to us as a 3-week old kitten in 2016. She was found on the fairway of the Brickyard Golf Course. She was bottle-fed and thrived. We were tempted to keep her for ourselves, but have a 2 cat limit in our own house. She was adopted out at 3-4 months old in the summer of 2016. In November 2020, she was abandoned. Her finder decided to adopt her. Unfortunately, the new adopter wound up on hard times, unable to afford her care and surrendered Winry back to us this summer. Winry had flea dermatitis, alopecia and an ear infection. After vaccines, Revolution flea treatment, three skin calming baths and ear medicine, Winry's fur is growing back beautifully, she is healthy and she is ready to find a new forever home. She has NO TEETH, due to stomatitis a few years ago. That does not stop her appetite though. We currently have her on Diamond Care Weight Management kibble (yes, she can still devour dry food) and half a can of Fancy Feast pate (various flavors, warmed with added warm water) daily. Winry was living with other cats, but stopped using the litter box. So we recommend no other cats in her household. She is very particular about the cleanliness of her litter box which she needs cleaned daily (or at least every other day). She was living with an 11-year old pit bull and did great with visiting nieces and nephews. Winry is now 9 years old, spayed, updated vaccines, microchipped and re-tested negative for FIV/FeLV. She should be on Revolution for flea prevention all year.
