Trans Day of Remembrance 2025 Today we honor the lives of our trans family who were taken from us through violence, hatred, and neglect. We remember them with love and with purpose. According to the most recent global monitoring reports, at least 281 trans and gender diverse people were murdered in the past year. These are just those that we know of. Eighty-eight percent were Black or Brown. Many were activists, sex workers, migrants, and young people. Most were killed in Latin America and the Caribbean. Many were killed in their own homes or on the street. These numbers reflect not only loss but also a global pattern of racism, misogyny, and state violence that continues to target our communities. In the United States, the Trans Remembrance Project recorded 58 deaths of trans and gender expansive people. This included 27 deaths from violence and 21 deaths from suicide. Youth made up 61 percent of the suicide cases. Today we hold space for grief and remembrance. We also commit to building a world where our trans communities can live with joy, security, and freedom. Community platforms like ours do not build themselves overnight. Every post, every follower, and every ounce of engagement takes time, care, and years of persistent labor. For some reason, there are people who feel a sense of entitlement to our social media accounts. We receive, virtually daily, messages that make demands like “Post this,” often with no context, no thanks, and no awareness that they are asking for free labor from a vastly overextended and underfunded nonprofit. That is exactly why we created a social media policy several years ago. It helps us set healthy boundaries and helps us stay focused on using our limited time and energy in ways that keep our work sustainable. Today, the Supreme Court of the United States gave Donald Trump the power to enforce a cruel policy he implemented earlier this year that blocks transgender and nonbinary people from having passports that reflect who we are. This is state-sanctioned erasure and a direct attack on our freedom, safety, and dignity. Our identities are not up for debate. No court can ever erase who we are. No court can ever erase our truth.
