Here's a link to a review, written by Chaucer Cameron & published in Ink Sweat & Tears, of my new poetry collection, Love the Albatross.

We need to talk ... & read & write poems about ... estrangement, whichever side of the divide we find ourselves on.
Image shows book cover by artist and illustrator, Katie Marland, of a Laysan albatross and its chick, which looks, in Katie's words, as if it's been in the tumble dryer and is none too pleased about it. Book photographed against ancient stone coffin lid, covered in lichen, in local churchyard in Bristol, UK.

This is just to say, I think it's about temptation. (Should have been Adam who stole the apple.)

It's certainly the sense of smell that hotwires the past.

Can't eat - or even contemplate - an orange without thinking of this poem by Brian Patten. RIP. 🍊💔 🍊

'Well, hello, Mistress Squizzle with an acorn in yer gob'
In the branches of a tree, a grey squirrel with wide eyes and an acorn in its mouth looks straight down the lens of the camera

Cwtch the Collie (the best girl there ever was) says Happy International Dog Day 2025 and why not give @niallharbison.bsky.social of Happy Doggo a follow?
A small tri border collie, with possibly a bit of terrier in there somewhere, is sitting on fallen leaves. She's wearing a turquoise harness and looks every inch the very very good girl that she is.

We only saw the notice prohibiting dogs during the summer months afterwards. Apologies to anyone we might have disturbed. #nodogsallowed
A small black and white border collie stands on an empty sandy beach. In the background, the distant mountains of the Lake District.

Remembering Andi Langford-Woods, poet, who died yesterday. Organiser of Bristol Acoustic Night, and a pivotal member of the #bristolpoetrycommunity. I think it's safe to say we'll never forget you, Andi 🎇 🎇 🎇 #bristol #poetry #poetrycommunity

Happiness is a warm dog on the Teignmouth and Shaldon ferry
A small tri border collie is sitting on a ferry boat, next to a woman in a red top. Both are smiling at the photographer. In the background is a red ensign at the stern of the ferry, which is blowing in the breeze, and more boats on an estuary with hills behind them.

It's Rippon Tor. Haytor is to the right. You can see it, with Saddle Tor between them, from the Point in Teignmouth.

Reading 'How the Worst Day of My Life Became the Best' by Andrea Gibson at today's Silver Street #poetry #openmic #spokenword #andreagibson
Woman with brown curly hair wearing a blue dress is standing at a microphone and reading from a piece of paper in her hand; behind her is an early 17th century tomb and eighteenth century wall monuments

Even the bird poo is beautiful in the woods right now, by which I mean purple and strangely glittery
A vaguely heart-shaped blob of bird poo, stained purple by blackberries the bird has been eating and also glittery (insect wings?) lies on a fallen green leaf with an orange leaf to one side, which provides a pleasing colour contrast

A wren feather, one inch long and beautiful
A tiny wren feather in shades of brown, russet and cream is held between forefinger and thumb against an out-of-focus background of earth and leaf litter

A bit over-awed to be guest-poetting at Verbatim in Bishop’s Castle, Shropshire on Weds 30th July, in The Lab, just up the road from the Poetry Pharmacy. It's spacious & accessible, so if you’re local, come along with a poem to read. Start is 7.30pm; sign up for an open mic slot on the door #poetry

Feather goblin here too!

I carried it home and laid it in the garden with a weighted bowl over the top, so the foxes don't make off with it. Now it's a matter of waiting for the organisms in the earth to do their work, and then salvaging any feathers there in a few weeks' time.

So. One moment you're happy because the wood’s just given you another jay covert; then, moments later, on the other side of the river, you’re desolate because suddenly there’s too many.

(I need to point out our dog, Cwtch, is a gentle and caring spirit. Poor jay was like this when we got here.)
A newly dead Eurasian jay lies on the woodland floor, on earth, twigs and leaf litter. A concerned border collie nuzzles it gently.

But I might have to vote for them if Labour carries on chasing the Reform vote!
