I have the same problem with a parent. I'm the bad guy for not being cool with my parent's choices. When I ask why that vote was okay or the rationale, it's, "I'm not talking about it!"

Yes. You absolutely should have soldiers questioning the legality of their orders! Legality is fairly cut and dry. And if any soldier questions it, a superior should be able to explain how it's legal.
