Éire, Ciarraí an domhain.
There is no way you can really view partition, the sectarian Northern Irish state, and the Troubles in a vacuum, but a lot of people do.

The arbitrary 'end date' is just put at 1922, when it should really be 1998.

My favourite was a Brit I saw on reddit the other day who was rightfully annoyed at Russia’s annexation and settlement of Ukraine, but who then argued that the Ulster Plantation was just a result of ordinary economic migration from Scotland.

I know it’s reddit, but still.

Well, the families of people killed by the British state in Northern Ireland at some point in the last fifty years definitely do.

I think I blocked them in a rage, but the post that brought on that rage described Irish people taking issue with British Imperialism as us just having a chip on our shoulder.

It isn’t legitimate, we’re just perennial victims, and our approach to defence proves it, somehow.

Genuinely mental.

Beyond being a massive twat, how exactly do you expect to sway Irish political opinion in favour of increased military spending by going “maybe Britain was right lol.”

That will only ever be met with a big old fuck you in response.

I can’t remember her name, but there’s someone on here who routinely pops up in threads about Irish defence policy downplaying Britain’s history of repression here because we’re “annoying and have a chip on our shoulder.”

I know, but that isn't what I'm talking about.
November 27, 2025 at 5:12 PM
That sounds incredibly similar to here, really.

I don't really know what the general atmosphere is like in the Netherlands, but a Dutch erasmus student in my class absolutely hated Germans with a passion.

Somethibg tells me he might've been a bit weird, but the Dutch-German animosity was not something I was that aware of until then.

I also find some of the messaging from Britain incredibly weird.

They'll appeal to our 'shared history,' then turn around and say things like "we'll do it without you anyway, you can't stop us.'

Sorry, are you trying to appeal to us as a partner or are you threatening us?
November 27, 2025 at 3:15 PM
Well, yeah, but they're knobs.

Just cut Britain out altogether and work with France or Spain.

We could give them a little base at Kinsale, like old times.
November 27, 2025 at 3:07 PM
I find a lot of reflexive anti-British irritating most of the time, but their military is one of the few places where I find it really difficult to ignore.
November 27, 2025 at 3:01 PM
It might be incredibly petty on my partbut the very sight of a Para flag just makes me angry. I hate them with a passion, and that won't change.

What they did here, how the British government covered up their crimes, how Loyalists use their flag to taunt survivors.

Fuck 'em. All of them.

This is sort of where I am. In theory, I love the idea of Ireland and the UK actually getting on, which we mostly do anyway, and working together militarily, but I can't deny I have a deep personal dislike for so many aspects of the British military that it makes me uneasy about the whole thing.

Ah the aul “appeal to unionists by lip curling at nationalist/catholic/republicans”
Also very sectarian to presume unionists want someone de platformed just because she’s a nationalist, I know loads of unionists from our village who were so supportive of her!!

Online arguments about the Troubles are often representative of the whole thing.

One side is weird Americans justifying IRA bombings, the other side right-wing Brits justifying British Army murderers. Both sides ignore Loyalist terrorism and the opinions of people from Northern Ireland.
November 26, 2025 at 1:06 PM
A left-wing Brit being weirdly patronising and ignorant about Ireland?

Well, I never.

I don't think there'd be any military action, but I do think the government would threaten us and stir shit up.
November 26, 2025 at 12:01 PM
Personally, I think Farage and his ilk are just as likely to try and rid themselves of NI.
November 26, 2025 at 11:38 AM
I highly doubt any invasion will ever happen again, but I can definitely see them heavily interfering and making our lives hell on a whim.

She did, but luckily enough, she was too thick to know that we have a food surplus and actually provide Britain with food.
