China used to be the junior partner, and the fact that it has leapfrogged would give him and his ilk serious ulcers. It also would help explain why he wants to be so chummy with NK - deep down he knows he's at their level.

I've wondered sometimes if Putin's malaise is more linked to China's rise than anything else - meaning, the fact that "even" China has far outstripped Russia over the past 30 years is what really underlines his "greatest disaster" idea of CCCP falling apart, more than anything.
