Essentially, I do not respect people who change their opinions based on social pressure instead of anything of merit like being proven wrong.

Yeah, I agree with that. Actually changing your mind because someone else proved you wrong is good.
What I am saying is that I do not respect people whose opinions are purely based on the opinions of the people around them, for whom opinions are purely a social group cohesion thing.
