that's not my real picture
Rather than cyber attacks, spying, building a wall, radar jamming, blockades, etc which are all things they can do that don’t physically hurt or kill anyone

I think in advanced military tech in the 60s-80s, ‘kinetic’ specifically meant a weapon that actually used kinetic energy rather than exploding - eg super fancy stuff like railguns

But somehow that migrated to meaning “anything that kills or hurts people in the physical world”

Dickens and Marx lived in London at the same time. Dickens knew about Marx and the Communist Manifesto, and did not join in the socialist movement or ever comment on it. Marx frequently referenced Dickens stories and characters though.

While Dickens wrote a great deal about poverty, he never said a word about the necessity of a robust welfare state, since that hadn’t been invented yet.

He also was very racist and anti-Semitic even for his day.

They believe the government is Scrooge, and they are the oppressed workers. And they’re generous because they give $50 a year to their church.

We’re close to the maximum of the sun’s 11-year radiation cycle (notice all the auroras?)

This may be a contributing factor

Interesting detail: they are saying old versions of the software are not affected. So the problem is a bug in the new software that doesn’t handle bit-flips correctly somehow.

But anyway I hope Airbus is a whole lot better than the company I worked at that shall remain nameless.
November 29, 2025 at 3:46 AM
There are hardened CPUs and memory that should theoretically be very resistant to bit-flips. I assume that they would use those? But there’s stuff outside the CPU and memory like I/O and microcontrollers that might not be so robust.

Shipping things that need to run in a box where you don’t have access is so completely different from shipping a running service where you can see when it fails and how…
November 29, 2025 at 3:41 AM
I know, right? One of the companies I worked at did stuff like that constantly. “The software crashed and we’re not sure how. We’re going to find an issue that might be related, and issue an emergency update to fix that! Maybe that will work…”

*I learned Klingon as a kid in enough time to be UPSET when Marc Okrand just decided that Klingon would have a word for "to be" because General Chang needed to quote Shakespeare in The Undiscovered Country. Just straight up fucked up the language.
