When you try and release the light to change the bulbs, the plastic snaps off.
Great design, shonky execution.
Thankfully the remaining part is easily accessible, so I popped it out to sort out the situation. Couple of minutes with a flap disc and a cutting disc and voila

Last Thursday I found out my car is on a list.
It's on Halfords 'do not attempt' list for headlight bulb changing.
This is because VW put an angle drive system on the release for the headlight units. Now these vehicles are older, the plastic housing is brittle and the mechanism is furred up

It's very rare I just drive to enjoy driving. This was one of those occasions and it vindicated the money I've spent re-bushing the Touareg. It was a great (although wildly inappropriate) steer on this route. It is a good dog.
