![Hamid thinks there is no point in "managing [relative American] decline with grace," because the U.S. actually "has the economic, political, and military resources to resist decline." He presents the problem as one of willpower and ideas, of overcoming those pesky defeatists sapping Americans' gumption. Hamid quite consciously taps into the neoconservative tradition, quoting Elliott Abrams on the urgency he felt about losing the Cold War in 1979. It is an ironic citation: Abrams was spooked not by Soviet missiles but by recent popular revolutions in the Third World—by other people making the "wrong" decisions about their future.
That is the final irony of The Case for American Power. Hamid laments Washington's toxic relationships with Middle Eastern dictators as an "exception" to the march of democracy in a U.S.-dominated world. Yet he finds himself agreeing, in principle, with the people who forged that relationship. Worth noting that Aaron David Miller, who was present at some of these very meetings like Malley, admitted over 20 years ago that he himself was a lawyer for Israel rather than a diplomat.

I posted about this a few wks ago but I don't think enough people are aware that Israel changed its demands last minute in its negotiations with Syria, not only does Israel want Syria to unilaterally demilitarize its entire southwest, it also wants Syria to normalize relations and concede the Golan.

Two things that come to mind as I see this
1) Important to remember that Zohran Mamdani's relatively conciliatory approach to the issue of Palestine and his joy-based attitude does not actually stem any of the criticism.
2) It's doubtful that anyone in Democratic leadership comes to his defense

I think this is correct to some extent, Democrats who share a lot of opinions with traditional Republicans on MENA are going to try and & those fleeing the GOP as it undergoes groyperification, but also I don't really think there's that much thought behind this by Clinton. She's just pro Israel.
