During National Preparedness Month, you shared your questions about disability and disaster planning.

We turned them into an Extended FAQ, because real preparedness means centering real experiences.

What else are you wondering?

#DisabilityInclusion #EmergencyPreparedness
Slide 1: The slide reads, “Extended FAQs: September’s National Preparedness Month Most Asked Questions” with The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies logo and a wheelchair user icon. Slide 2: The slide asks, “How do I store water when I can’t lift or carry heavy gallons?” The answer explains that you can use smaller bottles, collapsible containers, or water pouches, and store them near your bed or mobility devices. It suggests asking friends, neighbors, or local groups for help. Slide 3: The slide asks, “What if my insurance only lets me get 30 days of medication at a time?” The answer explains that you can request a 90-day supply if possible, ask about emergency override exceptions, and keep an updated medication list and a go kit with your information. Slide 4: The slide asks, “What if I don’t have people nearby I can count on in an emergency?” The answer explains that you can connect with mutual aid groups, Independent Living Centers, or local disability organizations, use SOS phone apps, and keep an ID, medications, and device chargers in a small kit.

Thank you to all who joined our webinar yesterday on strengthening transit evacuation plans! June Isaacson Kailes shared powerful insights and practical strategies, like the 4 Stages of Disaster Denial, showing why proactive, inclusive planning is essential. #DisabilityEquity
White text: 1. Blue bar: “It won’t happen here. ”2. Red bar: “Even if it happens here, it won’t happen to me.” 3. Yellow bar: “Even if it happens to me, it won’t be that bad.” 4. Gray bar: “Even if it’s that bad, there is nothing I could have done about it anyway.” “4 Stages of Disaster Denial." This month highlights why inclusive planning saves lives. Without it, people with disabilities face unnecessary risks during disasters. We all share responsibility for creating emergency systems that truly protect every life and every body/mind. #NationalPreparednessMonth
ID: Blue background graphic with white text that reads: “Did you know, people with disabilities are 2–4x more likely to get injured or die in a disaster? To be clear, the issue isn’t disability itself; it’s the lack of systemic inclusive preparedness and the lack of options that make it impossible to plan effectively. Together, we need to change this because disabled people deserve to survive.” The Partnership logo is at the bottom.

Too many disabled students are left behind when disasters strike. This #NationalPreparednessMonth, we’re sharing real stories, like the student told to “stay put” during a fire drill to spotlight the gap and help campuses build emergency management plans that include everyone.
Red banner headline reads “Disabled Stories in Emergency Preparedness.” Text shares that many disabled people first realize they’re treated as expendable during school fire drills, highlighting a freshman who was told to keep her evacuation chair in her dorm room. She couldn’t lift it herself and was instructed to “stay put” during fire drills while everyone else evacuated. Background shows students’ lower halves sitting on steps, including someone in a wheelchair. Large centered quote: “There is no way I could lift this chair on its own, let alone in an emergency when my life is in danger… Why is there not a set system to ensure my safety?” - university student. Black text on white background explains this is more than weak compliance—it reveals a gap in planning. It notes that universities often lack clear plans for disabled students and calls for real, tested preparedness strategies, ending with bold text: “How is your campus preparing for disabled students during emergencies?”

El logo de The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies aparece debajo.

Disability Justice reshapes preparedness, centering disabled leadership of those of us most impacted. #NationalPreparednessMonth
The first graphic reads: “Disability Justice belongs at the heart of climate justice.” The second graphic explains how emergency preparedness has historically excluded disabled people and says disabled people must be included in and leading all levels of emergency management. It states that emergency management strategies should be developed with disabled people, not just for them, and that public health and emergency response efforts must center the needs of disabled communities, especially multiply marginalized disabled people. It concludes: “Disability Justice benefits everyone by creating systems that account for different bodies, minds, and ways of moving, speaking, and living, making emergency planning more effective and adaptable.” The third graphic features a quote: “Climate justice must include Disability Justice. You can’t have one without the other.” — Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Disability Justice writer and activist. The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies’ logo appears below.

Preparedness is access. This National Preparedness Month, build a Go Bag with your disability and access needs in mind. Here’s a list to get you started!
Four-part graphic on disability-inclusive Go Bags. The first panel says “How can you start preparedness at home? Make A Go Bag” with an image of a yellow backpack, water, canned food, flashlight, rope, meds, and cash. The second panel, titled “General Go Bag Items,” lists water, non-perishable food, medications, first aid kit, flashlight, phone charger, radio, cash, hygiene items, clothing, important documents, blanket, and whistle. The third panel, “Disability-Specific Go Bag Items (Part 1),” lists mobility aids, medical equipment and supplies, and communication tools. The fourth panel, “Disability-Specific Go Bag Items (Part 2),” lists service animal supplies, sensory or comfort items, and support network info. A tip box reads: “Label your items clearly, use an accessible bag, and update your Go Bag every 6 months.”

Disabled wisdom is survival wisdom. When preparedness includes disability, it strengthens safety for all of us. ♿️
A black background graphic with a white disability icon in the corner. Large text reads: “September. National Preparedness Month must include disability because… ‘Disability teaches us how to adapt creatively — a skill the whole world needs in the face of climate crisis.’ — Alice Wong.” At the bottom, The Partnership’s logo with a yellow sun design appears.

Rolling back Section 503 = fewer jobs, deeper poverty, and higher disaster risk for disabled people.

Employment equity is about survival, dignity, and justice.

Learn more: tinyurl.com/503-removal

#DisabilityRights #Section503
“Section 503 Rollbacks – Why It Matters.” “The Department of Labor has proposed changes that would gut key parts of Section 503 regulations, removing the 7% workforce goal and voluntary self-identification process that hold federal contractors accountable for hiring disabled workers.” “The Partnership submitted official comments opposing these rollbacks because: • Disabled people are 2–4 times more likely to die in disasters, largely due to poverty. • 24% of disabled people live in poverty, driven by barriers to work. • Section 503 protections help open doors to employment and stability, which directly impact disaster survival.” “Rolling back these rules means fewer jobs, deeper poverty, and higher disaster risks for disabled communities. Employment equity is disaster equity. Read our full comments here: https://tinyurl.com/503-removal.”
