The "using the original film" explanation would also account for why the color grading looks so bad (they couldn't be bothered to redo it apparently)

I think it's a matter of them using the original film (iirc some of the show was film, some was digital) and failing to re-do the necessary VFX work to cover up the vomit hose guy and the hose itself (which would still be visible even if the frame was cropped like some people are suggesting)
