A big part of why the last Tory government accomplished so little is that their collective memory of the Thatcher government is one day in 1983 and one day in 1987, while their recollection of the Major government is a Wednesday in 1993 and a Thursday in 1997.
As the papers go big on CCHQ briefing that Labour is capitulating to union wage demands, these are the pay awards granted by Thatcher in one of her first acts in government. Like Starmer she judged that she couldn’t afford the political cost of allowing industrial action to continue
